The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is part of a larger complex that includes the Caloosahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, The Matlacha Pass National Wildlife Refuge, Pine Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Island Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The 8,000 acres are mostly nesting and roosting islands. There are 245 birds that live in this refuge and there are many migratory birds that consider this a save passage, reptiles and mammals and many other endangered species such as the manatee can also be seen.
