If you want to experience a unique and fascinating slice of Florida history, not to mention enjoy plenty of outdoor recreational activities as well, you'll love camping in Koreshan State Park.

Located in Estero on Florida's Gulf Coast, the park was once the site of a religious colony known as the Koreshan Unity. Eleven nationally registered historic buildings dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries remain in the park to this day, while campers are also drawn to the park for its excellent fishing, kayaking, and wildlife watching opportunities.

And with a 60-site campground that boasts all the creature comforts, Koreshan State Park is a great place to camp in an RV rental.

Getting Outdoors

While there are plenty of wonderful outdoor activities on offer here, the best way to start your Koreshan State Park RV camping adventure is to check out the park's history. Back in 1893, the Koreshans established a settlement known as New Jerusalem where the park now lies, building a farm, a nursery, and botanical gardens.

Today, the park is home to 11 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Set amid landscaped Victorian gardens, these buildings give visitors a feel for what life would have been like in the settlement more than 100 years ago. The major buildings, including the Founders House, are all ADA-accessible, and many buildings also feature interpretive exhibits that are well worth a look. This historic site also hosts a unique farmers' market every Sunday morning, so it's a good spot to pick up some fresh local produce as well.

Much of the other activity in Koreshan State Park centers on the pretty Estero River, which flows along the park's northern edge. This brackish tidal waterway winds its way to Estero Bay, roughly three miles to the west, and is a popular spot for canoeing and kayaking. Access to the water is easy, and canoe and kayak rentals are available within the park.

Other campers prefer to make the most of the river by wetting a line. There are several areas along the river where it's easy to fish straight from the bank or from a canoe, and the waters are home to redfish, mullet, snook, and several other species. Estero Bay is also a much-loved fishing destination if you're willing to make the three-mile paddle, but wherever you decide to try your luck, make sure you comply with all regulations regarding fishing in Florida state parks.

Camping at Koreshan State Park

If you want to go camping at Koreshan State Park, search for a rental RV in Lee County and then reserve a spot in the park's family campground.

The campground features 60 sites, all of which feature electrical and water hookups. All sites also get their own picnic table and fire ring, but only 48 of these sites are designed to accommodate RVs. There are four paved campsites accessible to people with disabilities. It's also important to know that the maximum permitted RV length is 40 feet.

Sites are generally quite spacious, with a decent amount of greenery between you and your neighbors to provide a little privacy. A dump station, laundry facilities, and sinks are provided in the campground, while firewood and ice sales are also available.

The park's picnic area and playground are just a short walk away from the campground, and leashed pets are welcome in the camping area. However, you'll need to make sure your pooch is leashed and attended to at all times.

Exploring the Area

When your Koreshan State Park RV camping adventure comes to an end, it doesn't necessarily mean the end of your vacation. There are plenty of other great attractions to be found on Florida's Gulf Coast, some of the best of which are within easy reach.

If you're looking for another lovely state park to explore, the unspoiled beachfront of Lovers Key State Park is just 25 minutes away. If you head north, you'll soon find yourself in Fort Myers where you can explore the fascinating Edison and Ford Winter Estates.

Alternatively, you can steer your rental RV to the south and find yourself in Naples in a little over half an hour. While you're there, make sure you enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Naples Pier, and maybe cast a line in the water to try your luck at catching a fish or two.

There's plenty to see, do, and experience, so rent a camper near Koreshan State Park and start exploring the best the area has to offer.
