While there are plenty of wonderful outdoor activities on offer here, the best way to start your Koreshan State Park RV camping adventure is to check out the park's history. Back in 1893, the Koreshans established a settlement known as New Jerusalem where the park now lies, building a farm, a nursery, and botanical gardens. Today, the park is home to 11 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Set amid landscaped Victorian gardens, these buildings give visitors a feel for what life would have been like in the settlement more than 100 years ago. The major buildings, including the Founders House, are all ADA-accessible, and many buildings also feature interpretive exhibits that are well worth a look. This historic site also hosts a unique farmers' market every Sunday morning, so it's a good spot to pick up some fresh local produce as well. Much of the other activity in Koreshan State Park centers on the pretty Estero River, which flows along the park's northern edge. This brackish tidal waterway winds its way to Estero Bay, roughly three miles to the west, and is a popular spot for canoeing and kayaking. Access to the water is easy, and canoe and kayak rentals are available within the park. Other campers prefer to make the most of the river by wetting a line. There are several areas along the river where it's easy to fish straight from the bank or from a canoe, and the waters are home to redfish, mullet, snook, and several other species. Estero Bay is also a much-loved fishing destination if you're willing to make the three-mile paddle, but wherever you decide to try your luck, make sure you comply with all regulations regarding fishing in Florida state parks.
