Getting Outdoors

The keen anglers among you campers will be pleased to hear the Gillis Pond is a little bit of a fisherman’s paradise. Although small, Gillis Pond is home to a range of fish species, each with their own unique sporting characteristics. The lake was somewhat unknown for many years, so competition to fish here is appealingly low. The lake is known to hold an abundant number of blue catfish, crappie, and brown trout, enough to keep the most ardent fisherman or woman busy. Whether Gillis Pond campers wish to fish from the shoreline or take a boat out on the water, with such fertile fishing to be had over a small area, they are rarely unsuccessful here.

Although the lake only covers a surface area of just over fifty acres, there is no better way to enjoy Gillis Pond than to take a boat out on the water. With a pubic boat ramp open all year round, access to the water is incredibly easy for campers. Those motorhome camping without their own boats should head to ‘McGhee’s Boat Rentals’ only a short drive away from Gillis Pond. Here, campers can rent a wide range of water-going vessels to enjoy out on the lake. For the more adventurous camper, kayaks and canoes can be rented, great for exploring the hidden shores and coves of Gillis Pond.

The ‘Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway’ is only a short walk from Gillis Pond. This protected green belt corridor offers some of the most pristine protected lands in all of central Florida. This is the perfect location for campers to leave the water behind, lace up their hiking boots and set off on a whole new adventure. The Santos Trail System that covers the greenway offers a network of hiking, cycling, and equestrian trails. The varying lengths and difficulties in trails make these hikes perfect for both the expert and beginner hiker.
