Discover Myakka City RV rentals for memorable road trips

Although Myakka City is a relatively young town, founded in 1915, there is evidence that there were Native Americans living and hunting in the area centuries before. Myakka was formed by four entrepreneurs who had dreams of becoming land mavens. They pooled their money together and purchased land in an area they knew a railroad would be laying down tracks, gambling that it would bring in an influx of residents. The streets were named after the first set of home buyers. The town was a success: the venture not only drew residents, an influx of businesses moved into the area, bringing in jobs. However, the Great Depression hit the region hard, and several businesses shut doors, and the locals had to move away seeking jobs.

The Great Outdoors

Skip the hotels and get closer to nature in a Myakka City travel trailer rental. The Myakka River State Park has a little bit of everything -- except mountains. Sun-dappled woods, wildflower-clad meadows, wetlands, and rivers. Hikers and outdoorsmen can get an idea of what the first Spanish explorers saw when they arrived at Florida. The untouched wilderness is home to thousands of exotic animals, including the roseate spoonbill which was on the brink of extinction just a few short years ago, alligators, armadillos, bald eagles, and many more. There are several miles of hiking and biking trails, and leashed dogs are welcome though they should stay away from water edge where alligators often dwell. The longest trail is a 39-mile loop that takes hikers on a winding tour of dry prairies and palmetto groves, crossing streams on split log bridges and ancient stone bridges. Mosquitoes often are described as “aggressive” and using a deterrent is advised. When they get to be too much, retreat into a luxury RV rental at one of the campgrounds, many of which have hookups.

RV Parks

Although it’s tempting to drive an RV rental to all the local sightseeing spots, it’s sometimes easier to park at a local campground and use a smaller vehicle or mass transit. Get closer to nature at one of the three Myakka River State Park campgrounds. Most have hookups for your RV, and all are designed to be close to restroom and shower facilities. Well behaved pets are welcome.

Exploring the City

Head into the fun-filled city in the comforts of a motorhome rental from Myakka City. See wild marine creatures up close at the Mote Aquarium. The Aquarium boasts touch tanks, reef exhibits, gators tank, and a 135,000-gallon shark habitat with bonnethead sharks, nurse sharks, and sandbar sharks. These exhibits are used as a part of the marine biologists and scientists’ research. In addition to educating the general public about the ocean life, researchers are actively learning about and working with wild animals in an effort to better understand their behavior and how to preserve the ocean environment for the future. Visitors can also opt for a shark encounter, a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium and the shark habitat. Help prepare food for the sharks and feed them from the edge of the tank.
