Getting Outdoors

When camping in a rental motorhome at Koko Head Park, bring along lots of sunscreen lotion as well as a couple of pairs of swimwear as you’ll be spending a considerable amount of time in the water. Sandy Beach, however, isn’t recommended for swimming because of the rough waters. If sipping a cool piña colada while you watch experienced bodysurfers doesn’t sound like fun, consider heading to Waimanalo Beach in Waimanalo for a relaxing swim.

Surprisingly, unlike many parks set by the beach in Hawaii, watersports aren’t the biggest draw to Koko Head Park. The park is best known for the Koko Crater Trail, popularly referred to as the Koko Head Stairs. While this trail is short, it sure isn’t for the faint-hearted. The trail is exactly what it sounds like, a bunch of old railroad ties mounted from the bottom to the very top of the hillside. The first 100 steps are quite simple, but the same can’t be said about the other 900 or so steps.

When you’re looking for a chill, laidback activity while Koko Head Park camping, try some kite flying. The constant trade winds at Sandy Beach are strong and steady, resulting in prime kite-flying opportunities for the whole family. If the day is clear, Lanai Lookout is the place to be. The lookout offers very distant views of Lanai, the sixth-largest island in Hawaii.

Camping at Koko Head Park

Unlike Mainland USA, where you’re able to choose campgrounds depending on the available hookups, in Hawaii, you’ll have to get used to camping with an RV with no hookups. That said, make sure to get your hands on the finest of Koko Head campers to make your stay more comfortable. When you’re looking to camp in an RV near Honolulu, consider the Sand Island State Recreation Area, which is only about a mile away. The RV park has no hookups, but campers have access to outdoor showers, bathrooms, and beach access.

The Mālaekahana State Recreation Area is worth checking out while exploring the eastern side of Oahu. The campground also has no hookups, but the current is calm, making for awesome swimming opportunities. Some of the park features include good mobile connectivity, outdoor showers, and beach access. There are also picnic tables, and pets are allowed. Keep in mind that you’ll need a permit to do some state park RV camping here.

Exploring the Area

While most only visualize gorgeous sandy beaches and warm clear waters upon the mention of Hawaii, it would be nice to note that Hawaii is home to more than just swimming and surfing. One of the best perks of camping near Koko Head Park is that you’ve got the means to tour the whole of Honolulu at your own pace. For a feel of the crème de la crème of Hawaii’s beaches, point your travel trailer towards Kailua for a swim in the turquoise waters of Kailua Beach, whose crescent-shaped bay was voted best beach in the United States in 2019.

Whether you’re a history buff or just a patriotic citizen of the United States, you’ve got to put some time aside and visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The USS Arizona Memorial marks the resting place of about 1,102 of the 1,177 United States Military personnel killed during the surprise attack of USS Arizona by the Japanese during World War 2. After spending some time honoring the fallen, find a parking slot for your Koko Head camper rental and hop into the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, which boasts of about to about 4000 naval artifacts.

Oahu is Hawaii’s most tourism heavy island. Because of that, it has more restaurants than any other island in the archipelago. If you’re a foodie, you’ll not be disappointed as Oahu is home to some of the finest chef’s in the World. Some of the best restaurants are located in the hip area of Kakaako, a hip center sitting right next to Ala Moana. When you’re looking to surprise your better half with a dinner date, some of the top-rated establishments can be found around Kaimuki and Waikiki. The north shore isn’t left behind. Haleiwa offers all kinds of fresh seafood, as well as Hawaii’s favorite, shaved ice.
