Recommended RV Campgrounds and Attractions around Elgin, IL
Illinois Beach State Park just north of Waukegan, Illinois, is a campground with spacious sites! This state park has some dog-friendly hiking trails, and plenty of other walking and biking trails. The long beach areas on Lake Michigan have some sandy areas, and some areas perfect for rock collectors. Many of the rocks have crystals in them and are very smooth from the constant action of the waves. Most campsites have some shade, the washrooms are functional and shower houses have great water pressure. There is a hotel with a restaurant, so you can still eat if you don't feel like cooking. The sites are asphalt and there is a dumping station. The park is very close to the town of Zion, as well as not far from Waukegan, so you are never far from grocery stores or services, even though it may not feel like it as you listen to the waves lapping and the crickets chirping.
Cernan Earth and Space Center of Triton College is an incredible place to experience incredible shows and learn about earth and space. Featuring shows about earth and space, laser light shows and many different exhibits, the center is a wonderful place to learn, have fun and spend your day!
When in Joliet, Illinois, it?s easy to be taken in by the abundance of places that allow petrolheads to let loose and get in as much of muscle cars and speeding as they possibly can, however, Joliet has another gem up her sleeve. The Rialto Square Theatre provides more than just arias and operas, as the productions are aimed at getting the whole family a glimpse at the wonders of the performing arts. Those who intend on staying in Joliet for a while may want to consider signing up for the membership program, which allows guests access to star treatment and a whole host of goodies and special events. The theatre is known to put on performances such as The Wizard of Oz, Teddy Bear Tea, The Sound of Music Interactive, and more. The theatre is also the ideal venue for those who wish to host a special event while in town.
With 150 acres of wooded, secluded sites on the historic Fox River, Hide-A-Way Lakes is a spectacular place to kick back, relax, go for a swim and enjoy your vacation. A wealth of outdoor activities await, from hiking and biking, to swimming and fishing. Don't be afraid to get dirty, as hot showers are available also. Perfect place for one of the trailer rentals available on Outdoorsy.
For the true urban experience, including parking in the shadow of a bustling convention center in one of America?s biggest and busiest cities, visit the McCormick Place Marshalling Yard. This location is less than 15 miles from the heart of Berwyn, and is every bit as stark as it sounds. While visiting in your RV rental from Chicago, there are few amenities that are available, and is little more than a parking lot also used by buses and industrial trucks. However, it?s worth it to be able to park your RV rental in the heart of Chicago, literally on the doorstep of the McCormick Convention Center, only steps away from attractions like the Arie Crown Theater and McCormick Bird Sanctuary, and just down the road from Soldier Field. The Lakefront Trail, a multi-use recreational route used by both commuters and travelers, is accessible just by crossing the street. The elevated train or "El" as it is know to locals, also has a stop at the convention center, which gives you access to virtually the whole metropolitan area. Regardless of events taking place in the center, the parking lot is always open, and under 24 hour security. Bring your RV rental while visiting Chicago. Chicago is a fantastic city!
If you are planning to explore Des Plaines in Illinois, the Blackwell Family Campground is the best and most convenient place to stay. It is in Wheaton, Illinois, and is just 20 miles away from Des Plaines. It is located in Blackwell Forest Preserve, a beautiful area with woods and a 62-acre lake called Silver Lake. You get electric hookup here, nice restrooms and showers, and a fire range and picnic table at each site. All of the 64 sites have shade and privacy. While staying here, you get the opportunity to use the forest's facilities. There are more than six miles of turf and limestone trails where you can hike, bike, ride a horse, and in the winter, cross-country ski. The trail around the McKee Marsh Area has two observational decks, from where you can watch birds and other wildlife. You can bring your own boat to the lake, as long as it's under 20 feet, or you can rent a rowboat, canoe, or kayak. If you enjoy fishing, you can take part in your favorite sport here on the lake. Bluegill, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike, and rainbow trout can be caught. There are also two ponds where you can fish as well. In addition, there are plenty of picnic sites. The one downside to this campground is that it's only open on weekends, except for holiday weeks when it's open for the entire week.
The birthplace of Ernest Hemingway is a beautiful, restored home that has been converted into a museum. Come learn about Ernest Hemingway, the Nobel Prize winning author who was born in 1899, by visiting the home in which he spent his early life.
Lord's Park in Elgin, Illinois is a connection to history. The park has playgrounds, a swimming pool, a zoo, picnic areas, and a pavilion dating back to the 1800s. The park was the site for concerts and events in the 1800s, and the zoo dates back just as long. The bison are a connection to this history of the land. They used to roam freely in the tens of thousands over what is now Illinois. While few remain, it is nice to see that there are still some bison or buffalo still living here. The park provides tennis courts and soccer fields to play on, and picnic tables to sit and watch or enjoy your lunch. The park is a pleasant green space in the city, with a history going back centuries. Spend time in this park, and you will be doing exactly what generations of people have been enjoying doing, on this spot, in Elgin.
