Illinois Beach State Park just north of Waukegan, Illinois, is a campground with spacious sites! This state park has some dog-friendly hiking trails, and plenty of other walking and biking trails. The long beach areas on Lake Michigan have some sandy areas, and some areas perfect for rock collectors. Many of the rocks have crystals in them and are very smooth from the constant action of the waves. The sites are asphalt and there is a dumping station. The park is very close to the town of Zion, as well as not far from Waukegan, so you are never far from grocery stores or services, even though it may not feel like it as you listen to the waves lapping and the crickets chirping.

Lord's Park in Elgin, Illinois is a connection to history. The park has playgrounds, a swimming pool, a zoo, picnic areas, and a pavilion dating back to the 1800s. The park was the site for concerts and events in the 1800s, and the zoo dates back just as long. The bison are a connection to this history of the land.
