Elgin was settled in the 1830s after The Indian Removal Act and the Black Hawk Indian War took place. First, this town became famous for its dairy products, and later, Elgin Watch Company opened and started selling watches throughout the United States. Elgin is home to famous Elgin Academy, which is one of the oldest co-ed, non-sectarian college preparatory schools west of the Allegheny Mountains.
