Elgin is a town in the northern part of Illinois, close to the border with Wisconsin and Lake Michigan. It is located approximately one hour's drive from Chicago which is the biggest city nearby, an hour and a half from Milwaukee. Elgin lies along the Fox River and has a long local history of education and invention. Elgin was settled in the 1830s after The Indian Removal Act and the Black Hawk Indian War took place. Later in 1835, brothers James and Hezekiah Gifford heard tales of fertile soil and decided to establish the town here, naming it Elgin. First, this town became famous for its dairy products, and later, Elgin Watch Company opened and started selling watches throughout the United States. Elgin is home to famous Elgin Academy, which is one of the oldest co-ed, non-sectarian college preparatory schools west of the Allegheny Mountains.
