Once you have finished the ranger-led tour, there will still be more to see. There are several documentary films about Abraham Lincoln that are screened inside the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, one lasting less than 30 minutes, and the others lasting approximately ten minutes each. These films are played repeatedly during the day and are a good prequel to the actual house tour. During the summer, volunteers wearing authentic period costumes demonstrate aspects of daily life from Lincoln's time, including but not limited to the toys that children played with, household chores such as doing the laundry, and even reenactments of some of the speeches that Lincoln gave. You can take a self-guided tour of the area which has more than a dozen homes that belonged to people who were part of Lincoln's personal life, either as neighbors or having closer relationships with the president. Some of the homes are open to the public, and you can walk through and browse at your leisure. The Sprigg House was owned by a friend of Mary Lincoln, Julia Sprigg; Ms. Sprigg's daughter is known to have looked after Lincoln's two sons. Another of the houses, the DuBois House, was owned by one of the president's close friends, a state auditor named Mr. Jesse DuBois. The Arnold House was owned by one of Lincoln's political allies, a Mr. Charles Arnold, while yet another house, the Shutt House, was rented to one of Lincoln's political adversaries, George Shutt. Shutt was a supporter of Stephen A. Douglas, who ran against Lincoln in his presidential campaign.
