Exploring the City

Rochester has many beautiful historical buildings preserved, and one of the most interesting is Fulton County Courthouse. It was built in 1895 and is a four-story Richardsonian Romanesque style limestone building. It also has a central bell and a clock tower. In the yard of the courthouse, there are four memorials, one for the Potawatomi Trail of Death, a cornerstone for the Rochester College, and two war memorials.

Another Rochester attraction is Lake Manitou, a human-made lake created in 1827. The lake was created for a mill for Potawatomi Native American Tribe use. The Potawatomi tribe called the lake Man-I-Toe, which means "the devil's lake" because it was believed that a monster lived in the lake. The lake contains over 775 acres of open water and is a great place for water sports and relaxation in the city.

The Fulton County Historical Society is located a short drive north of the city and has an important role in preserving the history and culture of the region. The museum is housed in a unique round barn building and living history village named Loyal. It represents the frontier life in Fulton County before the 1840s. The museum offers different events, tours, educational programs, and volunteering opportunities year-round.
