Getting Outdoors

There's no shortage of outdoor activities to enjoy at Indiana Dunes State Park. Choose a route from more than 16 miles of trails ranging from easy to moderate in difficulty. The Three Dune Challenge, the park's most rugged trail suitable for advanced hikers, travels over three of the tallest Indiana Dunes. This one-and-a-half-mile path gains more than 550 feet in elevation. Hikers who complete the trail will even receive a prize.

Lake Michigan offers endless water sports, including swimming and boating. The swimming beach on Lake Michigan is only open from May to September during designated hours, which are subject to change based on weather conditions and staff availability. The park's nature center is also a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. The wildlife observation room is an excellent place to view the park's diverse bird population and migratory species. History buffs will find an array of informative displays and presentations on the park's natural and local history.

The fun doesn't stop when the cold weather comes. Select trails in the park are designated for cross-country skiers in the winter. Don't forget to pack your winter gear in your rental RV, as the park doesn't offer rental services.

Camping at Indiana Dunes State Park

Campers at Indiana Dunes State Park can choose from 140 campsites equipped with all the amenities needed for a comfortable RV camping trip. All sites have 50-amp electric hookups and a level pad for tents and motorhomes. Other amenities include showers, restrooms, and drinking water. Playgrounds and a camp store are also located near the grounds.

Guests camping in an RV at Indiana Dunes State Park can choose from open sites, wooded sites, and beachview sites. Most spaces can accommodate rigs up to 55 feet long. Pets are welcome to tag along for your RV camping trip at Indiana Dunes State Park, as long as they remain on a leash less than six feet long.

Exploring the Area

Just 20 minutes east of Indiana Dunes State Park is Michigan City, Indiana. Explore the history of the area at the Old Lighthouse Museum, or take a tour of the Michigan City Lighthouse, built in 1904. From there, see the incredible beaches, visit the Washington Park Zoo or Friendship Botanic Gardens, or simply take a stroll with your family and enjoy some gourmet cuisine. Michigan City offers endless activities, so make time to explore some of the city's top attractions when planning your RV camping trip.

Valparaiso is the hottest spot in the area and a definite must-visit for visitors of the park. It has every cute shop and boutique you'd expect to see in a tourist town, as well as plenty of history and art to go around. Check out the world-renowned Valparaiso University's Brauer Museum of Art. The museum's vast collection celebrates American artists and features masterpieces dating back to the 1800s.
