Located in Central Iowa, Ames is a healthy city located around 30 miles away from Des Moines. The city offers the more than 65,000 residents a range of entertainment facilities from recreational and business to cultural and educational.
First recognized as a town in 1864, the city catered to the Missouri River Railroad and the city of Cedar Rapids. Cynthia Duff, one of the early settlers, was instrumental in securing this land for the city’s railroad. John Blair- railroad president, named this city after Oaks Ames who was not only his friend but also a congressman and a famous railroad promoter.
The city was incorporated into another community of 844 people in 1870. With its 12 blocks, Ames extended from its rail-road to Ninth Street. Duff Avenue is on the east and Burnett Avenue on the west.
