Getting Outdoors

While camping at Dolliver Memorial State Park, take full advantage of the trails that meander through the park. Follow a picturesque trail past the unique sandstone formations known as the Copperas Beds which tower over Prairie Creek. Hikers can test their stamina over the wide-open hillsides and through Bone Yard Hollow or near the Indian Mounds. Pick up a map of the trails at the park office before you begin exploring.

Dolliver Memorial State Park's location on the Des Moines River makes it a popular destination for RV campers keen to spend the weekend boating on the river. A boat launch ramp is conveniently located in the park. Motorized and non-motorized boats are permitted on the river; boaters should be respectful of others. The Rockwell City Iowa RV Park is a great place to camp near Dolliver Memorial State Park. Full hookups with 30- or 50-amp electricity, water, and sewer are available. Restrooms with shower facilities are centrally located for all campers to use. This is a kid-friendly RV park with an area of the park designated for kids’ play.

Exploring the Area

Before heading home from a weekend jam-packed with fun at Dolliver Memorial State Park, make a stop in Lehigh and visit the Brushy Creek State Recreation Area. This area is over 6,000 acres and is one of Iowa’s largest outdoor public recreation areas. Bring a picnic and enjoy a leisurely lunch amid the flora and fauna of Iowa. You can wander along the many trails and snap photos of breathtaking views.

Head over to Fort Dodge and the Fort Museum and Frontier Village. This replica 19th-century fort and village featuring a drugstore, schoolhouse, and jail is a great place to visit. There are thousands of artifacts, including Native American tools and art and military memorabilia. Fort Dodge was founded in 1835 by the mounted infantry called the Dragoons; the actual fort was not constructed until 1850.

While in Fort Dodge, make sure to stop in at the Blanden Memorial Art Museum. This museum is in the historic Oak Hill District of the city in a neo-classical building. It was originally built on private land by Charles Granger Blanden, but in 1932, the museum, including the grounds it sits on, was donated to the city. Permanent collections at the museum showcase exotic art as well as pieces from local Iowan artists and photographers.
