Keokuk is one of two county seats in Lee County, Iowa, and the state's southernmost city. It is named after the chief of the Sauk tribe who is presumed to have been buried somewhere in Rand Park. The area around the city was first settled around 1820 by an army surgeon, Dr. Samuel C. Muir, who had been ordered to abandon his Indian wife but chose to resign instead. By 1827, more Europeans had settled in the area; a trading company set up a post and several houses for its workers. This area came to be known as “the Rat Row.” Steamboat traffic on the Mississippi River continued to increase, allowing the village to grow. It was incorporated in December 1847. Keokuk has a strong association with baseball going back as far as 1875 and has been home to affiliate teams for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians, and a few other teams.
