Discover Shawnee

The Great Outdoors

Shawnee’s biggest outdoor attraction is Shawnee Mission Park - one of the most visited parks in Kansas. This 1,600-acre park has miles of walking and biking trails, a small lake with a boat ramp, and an off-leash dog area, and during the summer, visitors can attend the Theatre in the Park, which hosts community performances of popular musicals. If you’d rather spend some time along the Kansas River, head to the Mill Creek Streamway Park, which has over 17 miles of trails along the Kansas River and Mill Creek. Then, if you’re driving into Kansas City, Missouri, you should check out Kaw Point Park in Kansas City, Kansas. This urban park sits at the intersection of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, offering wooded trails and historical information about the Lewis and Clark expedition.

If you want to get a bit closer to nature when exploring the area with a rental RV near Shawnee, check out Clinton State Park and Kill Creek Park, which are just a short drive away from Shawnee. Clinton State Park is just four miles west of Lawrence, and at the park, visitors can explore over 25 miles of trails, multiple public swimming beaches, and an off-leash dog area along the Wakarusa River. The lake is also a great destination for water sport enthusiasts, and if you’re a mountain biker, check out the Red Trail, a challenging trail in the heart of the forest surrounding Clinton Lake. If you’d prefer a shorter drive, head to Kill Creek Park in De Soto. This secluded park has over 12 miles of multi-use trails as well as a beach and marina. When you rent an RV in Shawnee, you’ll easily be able to explore the lakes and rivers surrounding the Kansas City area.

RV Parks

Although there are not many RV parks in Shawnee proper, you have plenty of options around the area for setting up camp with the Shawnee rental motorhome. If you want to stay as close to Shawnee as possible, check out the Walnut Grove RV Park in Merriam. This full-service RV park has amenities from Google Fiber Wi-Fi to an on-site general store, making it a nice home base for exploring Shawnee.

Cottonwood Camping is also in nearby Bonner Springs, and it offers easy access to the city along I-70 and Kansas Highway 7. If you want a lot of amenities and don’t mind a short drive, check out the Suncatcher Lake RV Park, which offers full hookups along a private lake.

Those looking to get outside of the city should check out the campgrounds at Clinton State Park or the Kansas City West/Lawrence KOA. Visitors to Clinton State Park have multiple camping options along the lake. For easy access and electricity and water hookups, camp in the main park area at campgrounds #1 or #3, or you can head to the other side of the lake to the Bloomington Public Use area, which offers limited hookups in a more secluded environment. If you want resort-style amenities outside of the city, the Kansas City West/Lawrence KOA might be the right pick for you. This full-service campground has a pool, dog park, and Wi-Fi for all campers. With these options, you’ll almost certainly find a great place to stay with the rental RV in Shawnee.

Exploring the City

After hiking along the Kansas River or boating in Shawnee Mission Park, you can enjoy spending a night in this active suburb or head to downtown Kansas City for a night on the town. If you’re traveling with kids, check out the interactive Wonderscope Children’s Museum or the Sky Zone Trampoline Park. History buffs will enjoy Shawnee Town 1929, an interactive exhibit with live interpreters and period buildings, and if you visit on the weekend after Memorial Day, you can partake in the Old Shawnee Days Festival. True urban explorers, however, will head to the heart of Kansas City. If you like to shop, stop by the Country Club Plaza for a delightful mix of chain retailers and unique boutiques as well as some of the city’s famous fountains, and you can then head to the city’s Power and Light District for live music and drinks. Kansas City is also home to the only World War I museum in the country. However, if you do head downtown, keep in mind that parking in the heart of KC is notoriously difficult, so you may want to leave your Shawnee RV rental safely parked at your campsite.
