Turtle Creek Lake is a man-made reservoir on the Big Blue River in Kansas. Turtle Creek Lake was built primarily for flood control, but also provides extra water supplies for downstream communities. Recreational areas have been constructed at the lake to allow easy access for boating, hiking, swimming, and fishing, making the lake a great place for camping with an RV.

Turtle Creek Lake is located just a mile north of the community of Manhattan and equidistant from Kansas City in the east and Wichita to the south. This is an area of mostly flat farmland, but traveling just a few miles to the east takes you past many lakes and into more woodland areas just over the state line into Missouri.

Book an RV in Riley County and take some time to explore this interesting area of Kansas with family and friends.

Getting Outdoors

Covering over 12,500 acres and with over 100 miles of shoreline, Turtle Creek Lake is the second largest lake in Kansas and offers great recreational facilities. Fishing is one of the main activities here, and anglers won’t be disappointed by the variety of fish and the space available. The most prolific fish are channel and flathead catfish, with good stocks of crappie. Bass, trout, and saugeye are also present in the lake in good numbers.

Turtle Creek Lake is a great spot for windsurfing and sailing, thanks to the size of the lake and the prevailing winds. The same conditions can also make it choppy for powerboats, but there are good areas of shelter available. Water skiing and jet skiing are popular due to the lake's size, giving plenty of room for everyone.

There is a marina at Cedar Ridge State Park at the southern end of the lake near the dam, offering fuel sales, marina supplies, a snack bar, and boat slips. Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats can be rented at the marina. Parking is also available at the marina for your rental RV.

There are several short hiking trails on the lake’s shoreline, including the 1-mile Cedar Ridge loop. The trail has been designed as an ADA accessible route and is perfect for the whole family to get out in the fresh air. There are some nice views across the lake, bird watching opportunities, and plenty of wildflowers to discover.

Camping at Turtle Creek Lake

RV camping is available at Turtle Creek Lake at several campgrounds located around the shoreline. At Turtle Creek Cove Park, on the southeast shore of the lake, you’ll find a campground with 39 water and electric hookup campsites, a boat ramp, playgrounds, and a swimming beach. There are modern toilet and shower facilities in the center of the campground and a dump station for waste from your RV. This could be a great spot for motorhome camping if you don’t need all the facilities of a large campground.

A short drive to the west of Turtle Creek Lake on Milford Lake is Thunderbird Marina and RV Resort. Here you’ll find plenty of full hookup RV campsites, restrooms with hot showers, and a marina store for all your daily essential items. Should you have a boat or rent one, there is a ramp here for easy access to the lake and a sand swimming beach. Located right on Turtle Creek Lake's shore, this RV resort could be a lovely spot for camping with an RV.
