The almost 4,000 feet long earth dam was constructed in 1964 to impound the Barren River, and in 1965, Barren River Lake State Park was created as a recreational area.
Covering over 10,000-acres and with over 140-miles of shoreline, the huge Barren River Lake offers opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, and more. The lake is located between the cities of Glasgow to the east and Bowling Green to the west, and also sits close to Mammoth Cave National Park.

Getting Outdoors
On the southeast shoreline of Barren River Lake is Barren River Lake State Resort Park, which offers a range of activities from fishing, boating, hiking, swimming, and golf. There is plenty of space in the park for your rental RV, so take advantage of the numerous facilities available.With a shoreline of over 140-miles, there is plenty of space for fishing from the bank, and with the lake covering an area of 10,000-acres, there is plenty of room on the water to find a quiet spot to fish. There are plenty of boat launches available, plus canoes and kayaks can be launched from the bank. Anglers will be spoiled for choice with at least 12 species of fish in the lake, including various bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, and more.A marina is located in the park where canoes and kayaks, motorboats, pontoon boats, and jet skis can be rented, plus marina services are available should you bring your own boat. There are several other marinas around the shoreline offering boat rental and pontoons. All the marinas have a grocery and marina store, and gasoline pumps.There are some good hiking routes near Barren River Lake. On the north-western and near the dam, the Barren River Trail starts at the Tailwater Campground and is a 13-mile point-to-point hike that follows the Barren River. The trail is graded as moderate, but it is almost completely on the level, so fairly easy for the whole family. Along the way, there are nice river views, birdwatching, and wildflowers to spot.
Camping at Barren River Lake
There are three separate campgrounds around Barren River Lake, and each one offers electric and water hookup campsites, modern washrooms, playgrounds for the kids, and some outdoor sports facilities. These are great locations for getting closer to nature when motorhome camping in the area.Should you prefer a campground with more facilities when camping with an RV, then consider Bowling Green KOA Campground, located just a few miles south of the city. Aimed fair and square at the family vacation market, this campground has full hookup sites, can cater for RV’s up to 100 feet in length, offers a swimming pool and free WiFi. For your convenience, there is a camp store, laundry, a snack bar, and plenty of outdoor activities to keep the whole family entertained.
Exploring the Area
There are several small communities around Barren River Lake and stores at the lakeside campgrounds for basic items. Should you need more shops or choices of restaurants, the city of Glasgow is just a few miles northeast.Car enthusiasts should not miss the opportunity to visit the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, located just a short drive west from Barren River Lake. With over 80 corvettes on display, from one-off prototypes to classics, there is plenty to see. There is usually a corvette in the lobby that you can sit in and imagine hitting the road, and a gift shop to pick up memorabilia. The museum is a great place to visit while RV camping at Barren River Lake.A few miles north of Barren River Lake is where you will find Mammoth Cave National Park. The national park has over 400-miles of known tunnels and passageways, making it currently the longest cave system in the world. Along with guided tours of some of the caves, the park has plenty more to explore. Canoes and kayaks can be rented to explore the Green and Nolan Rivers; there are hiking trails and a visitor center for your convenience.A unique underground experience in Bowling Green is Lost River Cave, where you can enjoy an underground boat tour. The whole guided tour, after a short walk to the massive cave entrance where you’ll board the boat, takes you on an enchanting ride through the cave. What an amazing experience to have with the family!
The camper was in excellent condition. Lloyd and his wife were extremely nice and professional and had everything you could possibly need. They set everything up and all we had to do was show up with food. We had an amazing time. Highly recommend!
