Blue Licks Battlefield State Park is located in northern Kentucky between the cities of Lexington and Cincinnati. The park lies on the site of ‘ The Battle of Blue Licks,’ which took place in 1782 and is considered the last encounter of the American War of Independence. The state park memorializes the battle with a monument to the fallen soldiers of the United States that fought those loyal to Great Britain. Outdoor activities encompass many forms at Blue Licks Battlefield State Park and include some accommodating facilities. One of the highlights its having free access to the banks of Licking River, home some of the best river fishing in all of northern Kentucky. Blue Licks Battlefield State Park campers can try their hand at catching a wide range of fish on the banks of the Licking River; these include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, rock bass, and many different catfish. One of the advantages of fishing from the state park section of the river is campers will not be competing with other anglers for the best fishing spots. This quiet and picturesque section of the Licking River is must fish for any keen angler.

Alongside its fishing opportunities, campers can also take to the river in all manner of boats. Don’t worry if you are motorhome camping without your own boats. Campers can contact the State Park for guided canoe trips down the Licking River. These trips will have you tracing the steps of those early pioneers who boated their way through the rivers of North America. Boating along the Licking River will also provide the ideal bird-watching conditions. The many ravines the join onto the river are home to wood ducks, wood thrushes, fly-catchers, and red-headed woodpeckers. This state park is a perfect place to combine river canoe ride with a wildlife watch.

One of the biggest draws of Blue Licks Battlefield State Park is the many trails that loop around its hundred and forty-acre site. The trails differ in both length and difficulty, meaning they are ideal for all sorts of skill levels. ‘The River Trail’ is a one-mile loop that takes hikers along the same historical route where pioneer Daniel Boone and his men were captured by Shawnee Native Americans. Or try hiking the ‘Buffalo Trace’ an ancient buffalo trails that take campers to the Blue Licks cedar glades.

Camping at Blue Licks Battlefield State Park

RV campers will find that full hookups are provided at countless sites; these include 20, 30, 50 amp electric, water, and sewage hookups. On-site facilities include a dump station, flushing toilets, shower block, swimming pool, and even an on-site restaurant. The campground also provides campers with a long list of recreational facilities. These include a basketball court, picnic tables, fire rings, and children’s playground. Pets are welcome on site but must be kept on a leash at all times.

‘Cabin Creek Campground,’ just north of Blue Licks Battlefield State Park, offers an alternative to camping directly in the state park. Here full hookups are also provided, and facilities include a dump station, toilets, and shower block. Many of the sites are pull-thru, meaning all sized rigs are welcome here.

Exploring the Area

The ‘Pioneer Museum’ located directly within the grounds of the state park is one of the major draws and is not to be missed. The museum displays a wide range of exhibitions that showcase the long history of this area of Kentucky. These range from the prehistoric to the Native Americans, right through to the settlement of Europeans in the 18th century. The main focus of the museum is a step by step display of the battle that gave its name to the state park, Bule Licks. The museum also houses many original artifacts from the era - these include a button from a uniform worn at the battle, and several 18th center weapons that would’ve been used during the Revolutionary War.

The nearby city of Lexington offers campers a wide range of day trip opportunities and is only a short drive away from the park. The ‘Kentucky Horse Park’ located on the north side of the city is a fantastic day out. This working horse farm and educational theme park are a ‘one of a kind’ place and a must-see when in Lexington. Visitors can learn about all aspects of ‘man’s relationship with the horse’ or watch the ‘Horses of the World’ show - this showcases rare horses from around the globe. Shows include riders in full authentic costumes and are a delight for audiences.

Families with young children should be sure to visit the ‘Explorium of Lexington’ in the heart of the city. This children’s museum offers a wide range of exhibits and interactive displays, each showcasing a different area of science, nature, history, and travel. This hands-on children’s museum allows children to learn through play, educating themselves while enjoying their visit. This is the perfect place for families with young children. The Explorium of Lexington enables parents to relax, safe in the knowledge the young ones are entertained.
