The region surrounding Pawtucket in Rhode Island was the heart of the American Industrial Revolution, and Slater Mill is an essential part of that heritage. This unique venue is a combination of museum, school, and artistic workshop, and is part of the larger historic reserve that also includes Slater Memorial Park and the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park. Permanent exhibits here include both standing displays and interpretive performances to educate the public about factory and machine shops in the early 1800s, particularly the development of textiles. Slater Mill also offers a comprehensive educational programs for schools, corporate interests, and individuals in traditional art classes and studio time. A lovely square filled with quaint bargain shops, excellent dining, fun pubs, and a unique movie theater, offering art house films. The square is considered the heart of Somerville, and it should be a mandatory stop. Parking is hard to find so you may to take the T line to the Davis sq. stop. Revere Beach, which is three miles long, was the first public beach to be created in America, back in 1896. It is sandy and is well worth visiting if you enjoy swimming and watersports. It is also very popular with walkers. It has a boardwalk, which has shaded resting areas so you can sit and enjoy the views. These are handicap accessible. There are plenty of restaurants. bars, and ice cream parlors close by, so you won't go hungry. If you enjoy peace and quiet, go during the week, but if you like to see a bit of life, visit at the weekend. There is often a band playing at the bandstand, and excellent food stalls are set up. Probably the best time to come is July when the New England Sand Sculpting Competition is on. Some amazing sculptures can be seen, and the whole place has a party atmosphere. People from all over New England descend on Revere Beach for this special event.
A smaller beach where you can walk for a while and find quiet places. Spot the whales, and other wildlife, fly a kite. Park your car next to the beach and enjoy the sunsets, sand dunes and ocean air.
