This park is located near the far, northern tip of this mitten-shaped state. As the park's name would suggest, the small town of Cheboygan, MI lies near the park's borders. The tourist town of Mackinaw City sits about 20 miles to the northwest, while the state's capital, Lansing, is over 200 miles to the south.

The park is comprised mostly of forestland, and sits on the southern shores, of the northeastern portion of Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes. The Straits of Mackinac, where Lake Huron meets Lake Michigan, are just to the northwest of town. Numerous activities are available at this site, including camping, hiking, winter and water sports.
