Gull Lake lies in southeastern Michigan between the cities of Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and Hastings. This natural freshwater lake was formed thousands of years ago by glacial shifts. The lake doubled in size when, in 1833, a dam was built across the water, enabling a local pioneer to power a saw-mill.

It is thought that Gull Lake is named after the many seagulls who fly inland from Lake Michigan. Gull Lake’s close locality to many of Michigan cities, combined with its picturesque countryside isolation, makes it the perfect place to take an RV rental. Access to the lake with a rental RV is even easier with Highway 89 passing the southern shores. Many campgrounds are within a short drive of Gull Lake, making camping with an RV here simple.

Whether you wish to catch that next big fish, sail across serene waters in your own boat, or scuba dive to the bottom of the deep, Gull Lake is the place for you. Search for an RV in Kalamazoo County and see what Gull Lake has to offer you and your family on your next outdoor excursion.

Discover Gull Lake

Getting Outdoors

For those who seek the best fishing spots in Michigan, Gull Lake can not be overlooked. The lake is home to a wide range of fish species, each with its own unique sporting characteristics. Known predominantly for its largemouth bass, bluegill, rock bass, yellow perch, and landlocked salmon, the lake has well-stocked fisheries of both warm and coldwater fish. The quality of largemouth bass has led to bass tournaments being held here from May right through to October. Whether Gull Lake campers choose to fish from the nineteen miles of shoreline, through the ice in winter, or from a boat out on the lake, they are rarely unsuccessful.

With over two thousand acres of water, Gull Lake makes the perfect location for boating, particularly sailing. There has been a yacht club based at Gull Lake since 1926, and today the club offers sailing instruction and hosts multiple regattas during summer months. With many boat ramps and launching sites around the lake, access to the water is extremely easy. Those motorhome camping without their own boats should head to ‘Gull Lake Marnie,' here campers can rent a wide range of water-going vessels to enjoy out on the lake. Why not rent a pontoon boat, perfect for the whole family to enjoy a day out on the lake together.

One of the most unique recreational pastimes Gull Lake offers is the chance to scuba dive beneath its depths. The clarity of water here has created Gull Lake into a hot spot for diving for many years. Various artifacts have been placed in the water to make the underwater adventure here even more thrilling. Swim to the bottom of the lake and see objects such as a phone booth, motorcycle, car, ice shanty, swing set, railroad tracks, and two boats. The ‘Sub-Aquatic Sports & Service’ also offer to take divers out on night dives and ice dives during the winter.

Camping at Gull Lake

Those RV camping at Gull Lake have a number of campgrounds to choose from, all depending on personal preferences and how close they wish to be to the lake itself. Creek Valley Campground is an ideal place to camp, only a short distance from the shores of Gull Lake itself. The site offers full hookups including, 20, 30 amp electric, water, and sewer hookups. With many pull-thru sites at Creek Valley Campground, any sized rigs are welcome. Free WiFi is also provided, perfect for today's modern campers.

‘Battle Creek Michigan Campground’ is another perfect RV park for campers. Again, full hookups are provided here, including 20, 30 amp electric, water, and sewer. On-site facilities include a dump station, flushing toilets, RV storage, and even a swimming pool. Pets are welcome on site but must be kept on leashes at all times.

Exploring the Area

The local city of Battle Creek offers campers a range of day trip opportunities, perfect for the whole family to enjoy. Those who have a taste for all things natural history should head to the Kingman Museum. This natural history museum boasts a wide range of exhibits covering three floors, packed with artifacts and displays. Exhibits include taking a walk through the many Michigan habitats, getting an up-close look at how the human body works, and viewing the many exotic animals and insects of the world. The Kingman Museum is a must-see for those in the Battle Creek area.

The Kellog Bird Sanctuary located between Gull Lake and Augusta makes for a perfect day out, and one where the family can still be surrounded by the idyllic nature of Kalamazoo County. The sanctuary was originally started as a refuge for migrating Canada Geese but is now home to a wide range of wild birds. Visitors can also view many birds of prey here, including bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, and eastern screech owls. There are also many Michigan game birds such as grouse, pheasants, and quail and rare, threatened, or endangered species.

Another perfect family day out is a trip to the Binder Park Zoo, located south of Battle Creek. The zoo is home to over six hundred species of animals, covering many habitats from around the world. The zoo will make the perfect trip for families with young children. Call ahead, and the keepers will give guided tours of the zoo, providing children fun-based information, which is both entertaining and educational at the same time. An on-site restaurant also allows families to spend a full day here, getting the most out of their visit.
