Discover Amnicon Falls State Park

Getting Outdoors

With so much abundant natural beauty on show, the main attraction in Amnicon Falls State Park is sightseeing. Three main falls are the headline attractions — Upper, Lower, and Snake Pit — and the easiest way to see them from the best vantage points is simply to take a hike.

Just under two miles of trails wind through the park, many of which lead you to various viewing points around the falls. The most popular hike is the quarter-mile trek onto the island, which takes in the main falls as well as some smaller waterfalls a little further afield.

Along the way, you'll no doubt want to grab a picture or two of the Horton Covered Bridge. First built in the 1890s, this uniquely constructed bridge stretches for 55 feet and is well worth a happy snap or two.

If you'd like to do a little exploring away from the river, the Thimbleberry Nature Trail has got your name on it. This trail is just under a mile long and lets you get up close and personal with the local trees, flowers, and animal life, so it's worth the effort if you want to immerse yourself in your surrounds. And if you really want to experience the remote areas of the park, you can visit in winter and set out along the designated snowshoe trail.

But it doesn't matter where you go in Amnicon Falls State Park, as everything you do always seems to lead back to the river eventually. For many campers, that means trying their luck at fishing in the Amnicon River. This warm-water stream is home to a variety of species, including trout, so it's well worth bringing a rod and wetting a line when you get the chance. However, anglers 16 years and older need a fishing license to do so.

Other campers love nothing more than going for a dip in this beautiful river. Both swimming and wading are permitted in the park, and certainly offer welcome respite from the heat during the summer months, but caution is advised. Conditions can be unpredictable, rocks can be slippery, and there are no lifeguards on duty, so you enter the water at your own risk.

Camping at Amnicon Falls State Park

There are plenty of great reasons why RV camping at Amnicon Falls State Park will provide a memorable vacation, so search for a rental RV in Douglas County before hitting the road. When you get to the park, you can then set up camp in the peaceful campground.

This rustic camping area is surrounded by tall trees, ensuring that most sites enjoy decent shade during the warmer months. However, there are no electric hookups, hot showers, or flushing toilets here, so it's not the ideal spot for anyone who prefers to have their creature comforts close by when on the road. There's also no dump station in the park, and generator use is not allowed. These factors can be a turn-off for some campers. But if you're craving a little peace and quiet, you'll feel right at home here.

Vault toilets and drinking water are provided, while there's one ADA-accessible site and two walk-in sites. Other highlights include a sandbox, swing set, and a large sports field.

Finally, if you want to visit Amnicon Falls State Park with your dog, the good news is that pets are welcome in the campground. Just make sure you keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them whenever necessary.

Exploring the Area

When your Amnicon Falls State Park RV camping adventure comes to an end, you don't have to hit the highway and head home. With plenty of other interesting attractions nearby, there's no reason why you can't extend your vacation a little longer.

For example, if you'd like to spend a few more nights in another Wisconsin state park, you'll find Pattison State Park just over 20 minutes to the southwest.

If you decide to steer your rental RV northwest towards Superior, make sure you take some time to check out the excellent Lake Superior Zoo.

And if you're looking to head across the border into Minnesota, Duluth is less than half an hour away. When you get there, make sure you take the kids to check out the Duluth Children's Museum.

There's so much on offer when you rent a camper near Amnicon Falls State Park that you really are spoiled for choice. The good news is that whatever sort of adventure you're craving, you won't have to travel too far to find it.
