Let's start with a few questions to narrow down your options.
Lake Mitchell, located in Michigan, was originally known as Big Clam Lake. When paired with its smaller sister lake, Little Clam Lake (now known as Cadillac Lake), the two lakes indeed look like an open clamshell from above. The lakes were joined by a canal constructed in 1882 to enable logging efforts. Lumberjacks would float huge logs from the once-vast forest just west of Lake Mitchell over to Cadillac Lake, where lumber mills and a railroad depot were located. The lakes were renamed in 1903 in honor of William W. Mitchell and George A. Mitchell, who was credited with founding the town of Cadillac in the 1870s.
