Discover Lake Mitchell RV rentals for memorable road trips

Lake Mitchell, located in Michigan, was originally known as Big Clam Lake. When paired with its smaller sister lake, Little Clam Lake (now known as Cadillac Lake), the two lakes indeed look like an open clamshell from above. The lakes were joined by a canal constructed in 1882 to enable logging efforts. Lumberjacks would float huge logs from the once-vast forest just west of Lake Mitchell over to Cadillac Lake, where lumber mills and a railroad depot were located. The lakes were renamed in 1903 in honor of William W. Mitchell and George A. Mitchell, who was credited with founding the town of Cadillac in the 1870s.

Getting Outdoors

Tall, second-growth hardwoods crowd the shores of Lake Mitchell. Save for a couple of developed beaches, much of the coast runs wild, teeming with lush greenery. Covering around 2,580 acres, several varieties of fish swim within the depths of the tea-stained water. Lake Mitchell is a glacial lake formed around 10,000 years ago when a mile-high glacier receded north. As a result, the lake is fairly shallow, averaging about 15 feet in depth. Anglers can expect to catch walleye, pike, crappie, and several other less-common fish. Two boat launches are available for the public to use. Though both Mitchell and Cadillac lakes are popular, especially in the summertime, it doesn’t quite receive the same amount of visitors as Lake Michigan, which is about 45 miles to the west. It’s quite easy for an outdoorsman to find solitude and quiet, especially on an early misty morning.

Camping at Lake Mitchell

Skip the long commute from a noisy hotel and wake up surrounded by nature in an RV rental. There are several campgrounds around Lake Mitchell for outdoor adventurers to choose from. RV camp at Lake Mitchell at the William Mitchell State Park. Guests can choose from one of the 200 sites, most of which are in an open space. A few sites are lakefront, and all have 20, 30 amp electric hookups. Faucets with drinking water and bathrooms are a short walk from most sites, though the access may be turned off in winters.

Exploring the Area

In rural Michigan, far from a major city with modern attractions and amenities, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking there isn’t anything interesting to do. However, many small towns have charming shops, museums, and other attractions. With the help of a rental motorhome, traveling from town to town is effortless. Traverse City has several museums, including a highly-regarded botanic garden at Historic Barns Park, Dennos Museum Center, which houses an eclectic collection of art and Music House Museum, which displays unique and rare instruments.

Our first time camping in any sort of RV. Very glad we chose Michael and the teardrop trailer. All contacts, arrangements and details were effortless including pickup and dropoff of the trailer, even when we asked to move the times a bit.
Trailer was spotless and just as advertised/shown in photos. Checkout was easy including instructions on operation of sink, gas, electric, etc.
Only change we would have made is renting the larger, walk-in size which we will do with Michael if we camp next year.
Thanks for an excellent experience.
