Washington is a small community on the northern edge of the Detroit Metropolitan Area. It’s an hour’s drive north of the city, which makes it close enough for a day trip there, but distant enough that you won’t be dealing with any of the problems of the city.

Book an RV in Washington Township and you’ll find it’s the perfect way to see this part of the state. But if you get tired of driving, it’s possible to ride public transportation into downtown Detroit from the nearby town of Shelby, with bus trips taking about an hour and a half. It’s this combination of urban convenience and rural tranquility that makes Washington Township a great place to rent an RV.

Discover Washington

Getting Outside near Washington Township

Stony Creek Metropark is one of Washington Township’s most popular places to enjoy nature. The 4,500-acre park is centered on Stony Creek Lake, which is frequented by swimmers and non-motorized boaters during the warmer months. A private company offers kayaks, canoes, and paddleboats. But if you’re after more of an adrenaline rush, try the local adventure park for a zip line and obstacle course experience.

The Paint Creek Trail in nearby Rochester stretches for almost nine miles to Lake Orion and is one of the best places near Washington Township to go for a run or ride your bike. The parking lot in Rochester is the largest and best place to leave your Washington camper rental when using the Paint Creek Trail, but there are several other lots along the path.

Those wanting to hit the links will enjoy one or more of the four nearby golf courses, two of which have a full 18 holes to while away an afternoon. It’s a great way to stretch your legs and spend some time outside your luxury RV rental near Washington.

But if you’re after more of an encounter with nature, a little over an hour’s drive will take you to St Clair Flats State Wildlife Area. This small park on the shore of Lake St Clair is a haven for migratory and resident birds and is popular with hunters and birdwatchers alike.

RV Parks near Washington Township

There aren’t too many RV parks near Washington, with most of them being located near popular recreation spots or in the more rural countryside. Northpointe Shores RV Resort is one of the closest dedicated RV parks to Washington and is right next to Lake St. Clair. The 34-site park has full hookups, laundry facilities, and a boat launch on the lake.

Another nearby option is Riverview Campground Marina, near the lake’s northeastern edge and adjacent to the St. Clair River. It also has full hookups and even has boats for rent. Both parks are about a half hour’s drive from Washington Township. Another fairly close park is the Emmett KOA, forty minutes away near Interstate 69. The park has full hookups, a pond for fishing, bike rentals, and even a mini-golf course.

The nearest Walmart to Washington Township is in Shelby, around ten minutes to the south. If you need a place to stay for a couple of nights and don’t want to drive to some of the more distant RV parks, this is an option. It’s also a good place to stock up on supplies and anything you might have forgotten from home. To fuel up your Washington Township RV rental, you’ll want to swing by the Love’s travel stop on Interstate 69, as it’s one of the only nearby truck stops and the larger bays at the fuel pumps will make things much easier.

Exploring the Town of Washington Township

Renting an RV is a great way to see some of the exciting sights in Washington Township, and the most popular of them is almost certainly the Octagon House. The appropriately named home was a stop on the Underground Railroad during the early 19th Century and was owned by Loren Andrus. Today it’s open for tours and is a favorite among architecture enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

However, in the evening, you can entertain yourself with a flick at the Emagine Theater. They play several first-run movies and have leather, reclining seats for your luxury viewing pleasure. For those that enjoy puzzles and a good challenge, escape rooms offer the chance for you and a group of friends (or some newly made ones) to find your way out of the room before time runs out.

If you love craft beer, you’ll want to make a stop at one of the microbreweries in Shelby Township, only four miles from Washington. And wine drinkers will appreciate the handcrafted sangria, also located in Shelby. They have tastings of both white and red sangrias and bringing a few bottles back to your motorhome rental in Washington Township will be sure to brighten up a summer evening.

The best shopping near Washington Township can be found at the Mall at Partridge Creek. The open-air shopping center has over a hundred stores including most of the brands you would expect. There’s even a fourteen-screen movie theater to relax in once your feet have had enough of the retail therapy experience.
