Currently, the fourth-largest lake in New Hampshire, Winnisquam Lake encompasses a hair over 4,200 acres. Though the Native American tribes are long gone, their influence lingers. The tribe of Abenaki, an Algonquian offshoot, migrated to the area between the 16th and 18th century and back north to Quebec in summers. They gave Winnisquam Lake its name. The correct translation of Winnisquam is in dispute; however, the earliest known research, dated 1856, by a local historian indicates it means “beautiful water in a high place.”
