Northwestern New York is filled with a gorgeous landscape of rivers, thick forests, and gently rolling hills that often offer panoramic views. Dewolf Point State Park, which is located on an island in the St. Lawrence River, is a wonderful place to visit when you book an RV in Jefferson County. This state park is one of many that exist on Wellesley island, and between the collection of state parks and the St. Lawrence River, there is plenty to keep you occupied while motorhome camping here.

Dewolf Point State Park is very close to the Canadian border and was originally established in 1898 as part of the St. Lawrence Reservation project. There are many historic facilities at the park that are spread among its 13 acres of land. Dewolf Point State Park has beautiful panoramic views of the Lake of the Isles and is popular with tourists traveling along Interstate 81 between the United States and Canada. Some of the larger towns in the area that are fun to visit while camping with an RV at Dewolf Point State Park include Alexandria Bay, Watertown, and Clayton.

Getting Outdoors

There are many exciting outdoor activities to participate in while renting an RV and visiting this part of New York. During the summer months, things like hiking, biking, and hunting are all popular land-based activities, while the wintertime brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Many hiking trails can be found on Wellesley Island, some that follow the shore of the river with others that venture through forests and lead to overlooking vista points.

With Dewolf Point State Park being located on the Lake of the Isles and the St. Lawrence River, it is no surprise that the fishing in the area draws anglers from distances both far and near. A fishing license is needed to fish here, so when you plan on casting a line while motorhome camping at Dewolf Point State Park, be sure to update the necessary documents. The most common types of fish found in the Lake of the Isles are northern pike, yellow perch, panfish, bullhead, bass, walleye, and muskellunge.

Of course, fishing isn’t the only thing to do in the water here. The river is a popular place to boat and swim too, and the often pleasantly cool temperatures of the water are a nice reprieve from the hot summer heat. There is a lot of water to explore by boat, paddleboard, canoe, or kayak, and the nooks and crannies of the many islands in the area can provide seemingly countless picnic and relaxation spots for the avid adventurer.
