Northern New York is nothing like the world-famous city that shares the same state. Instead, the area is rich with natural attractions, dense forests, and breathtaking panoramic views of the great outdoors. When you book an RV in Jefferson County, you’ll be near the St. Lawrence River, which acts as a natural border between the United States and Canada. Along this river is Grass Point State Park, which is a point of land that extends into the river on the American side.

Grass Point State Park is well known as one of the best fishing destinations in New York, and guests visit this park to camp, swim, fish, picnic, relax, and all-around enjoy the outdoors. The state park overlooks the St. Lawrence River and has views of many of the islands that are nearby. It is possible to see Canada across the river, and Grass Point State Park draws visitors from many local towns such as Alexandria Bay, Clayton, and Watertown.

Discover Grass Point State Park

Getting Outdoors

The most obvious attraction of renting an RV and visiting Grass Point State Park is having access to the St. Lawrence River and all it has to offer. In this river, it is popular to swim, fish, boat, and enjoy the pleasant temperature of the water on a hot summer’s day. Many locals love fishing here, and the most popular species of fish that are caught include northern pike, walleye, bass, bullhead, yellow perch, panfish, and muskellunge.

A fishing license is required to fish here, so be sure to secure that before motorhome camping at Grass Point State Park when you plan on fishing. For those that don’t enjoy fishing, there are plenty of other fun activities to do while staying here, both in the water and on the land. Swimming is popular during the warmer months, and a small beach at the state park will give you access to the water. There is no lifeguard on duty unless otherwise posted, so be aware you’ll be swimming at your own risk.

Other fun activities to seek out while camping with an RV in the area is hiking, biking, hunting, and cross country skiing at nearby Wellesley Island State Park. This state park is just across a short bridge and on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River. There are many hiking trails to explore on this island, in addition to swimming beaches with lifeguards, hunting zones, and wintertime cross country ski paths.

Camping at Grass Point State Park

The state park RV campgrounds in the area are a very convenient place to stay when you rent a camper near Grass Point State Park. There are more than 70 RV compatible campsites for you to choose from, depending on availability. Many of the campsites can be reserved ahead of time, so when you are worried about the sites being full, make sure to book your campsites when you arrange the details of your rental RV.

The majority of the RV campsites at this campground have their own picnic tables, fire pits, grills, electricity and water hookups, and moderate privacy. There are centrally located dumping stations, bathrooms with flushing toilets, and hot showers for all campers to use. There is also a boat launch, a small beach, boat docks, and a playground all within easy walking distance of the campgrounds.

Exploring the Area

There is a lot to do in Jefferson County, and when you bring your Passports while exploring the area, it is easy to drive across the bridge to Canada. Staying domestic still offers a lot of fun adventure, though, and one close attraction worth checking out is the Wellesley Island State Park Minna Anthony Common Nature Center. This nature center is filled with information on local flora and fauna and is a fantastic way to expand your knowledge of local history and biology.

There are many towns in the area to check out, and the nearby Clayton is home to a unique Antique Boat Museum. This museum focuses on everything from freshwater boats to racing watercraft, houseboats, and more. There is an onsite 1903 houseboat that guests can explore, seasonal skiff and speedboat rides, and plenty of informational exhibits to keep you occupied for hours on end.

While visiting Grass Point State Park, it is convenient to camp in an RV near Watertown. This city is filled with restaurants, museums, and modern attractions that are a pleasant escape when the weather is less than agreeable. The Sci-Tech Museum is a playful children’s museum filled with educationally fun exhibits, while the Jefferson County Historical Society is aimed at a slightly older crowd. Watertown is also home to a diverse collection of restaurants, so after spending a day in town, it shouldn’t be too much trouble to find a place to eat that everyone can agree on.
