Beechnut Family Campground

Around Beechnut Family Campground is a rock climber’s heaven, there are several state parks, state forests, and county parks at which boulders and rock slabs pose interesting climbing challenges. Pilot Mountain State Park features a unique mountain that resembles a funnel, with a cylindrical knob rising abruptly from the top, exposing granite cliff walls. A favorite for many climbers, hikers and outdoorsmen can enjoy the sight of climbers clad in bright colors painstakingly inch their way up the sheer wall. Those who successfully reach the top are rewarded with a sweeping view of the neighboring mountains. There are several miles of multi-use trails shared with horseback riders. The trails vary in difficulty and length, and all have different features for outdoor adventurers to enjoy. One follows the Yadkin River as it descends deeper and deeper into a gorge. Another emerges into a fresh, open meadow where wildflowers bloom in abundance. Explore 14,000 acres at Stone Mountain State Park. Stone Mountain is best known for its rock formation that was created by an ancient volcano a millennia ago. The formation resembles a striated bowling ball, half-buried into the earth. Rock climbing is an activity enjoyed by many; however, due to the fragile rock formation, all climbers must obtain permits. It’s also considered a more challenging climb, and beginners are generally not advised to tackle this area without an expert guiding them. In addition to over 20 miles of multi-use trails, Stone Mountain State Park also is known for its excellent trout-fishing streams. Anglers can expect to catch rainbow and brown trout, and fishermen have been known to bring home trophy-sized catches, too. Wildlife teems in these woods, and sharp-eyed hikers may spot anything from white-tailed deer to bobcats and foxes to raccoons.
