Getting Outdoors

Hanging Rock State Park is beautiful year-round, but there are certainly more summer activities than winter activities. Water sports are one popular activity at Hanging Rock State Park. During those hot summer months, the 12-acre lake is a welcome spot to cool down and contains diving platforms and a historic bathhouse from the 1930s. You can also rent a canoe for paddling on Hanging Rock State Park Lake; private watercraft are not allowed. You can, however, bring your own non-motorized watercraft for navigating the Dan River, a popular tubing waterway. Canoes, kayaks, and tubes are also available for rent from nearby outfitters.

Camping at Hanging Rock State Park

Hanging Rock State Park campground is open year-round and can accommodate your rental RV. There are 73 sites at Hanging Rock, including one wheelchair-accessible site. All RV sites at Hanging Rock State Park campground are back-in sites with a maximum length of 60 feet. The sites are located in the park’s thick forest, granting campers both shade and privacy.

You’ll discover some exciting outdoor activities while camping at Hanging Rock State Park. Night owls can participate in the park's astronomy program, held during the summer months, to do a little stargazing.
