Near the shores of the Trent River, Historic Tryon Palace once served as the British governors' residence in the early 1770s. Surrounded by a 16-acre garden, at this spectacular site, you can take a walk along the trails or head inside and check out all the antiques within the mansion along with live demonstrations of period craft and historical interpretations. While at Tryon Palace, you can delve into more of the region's past at North Carolina History Center. Take an interactive trip from the 18th century to the present and observe artifacts, rotating exhibits, and enjoy some waterfront dining. Catch a show at the Cullman Performance Hall, check out the Duffy Exhibit Gallery to see what's in the rotation, and stop by the Pepsi Family Center to let the kids go wild. Another popular destination in the area is the New Bern Firemen’s Museum, offering plenty of interesting history to explore. You can learn about the great fire that destroyed thousands of buildings in 1922, among other things. This museum was founded in 1955 and built out of the old firehouse, and now you can head there to have a conversation with fire horse Fred or enjoy all the unique memorabilia and hands-on exhibits featured on-site.
