Once known by the name Old Fields, the tiny village of Newland was renamed in 1911 after the then Lieutenant Governor, William C. Newland. At this point, Newland was also designated the seat for Avery County.

The small mountain town is nestled right up against national forest land, and most of its visitors rent an RV in town to catch a glimpse of the lovely woods and mountains that hover around the edges of Newland.

You can book an RV in Newland if you feel like getting out into the lush forests of North Carolina, or exploring the ancient Appalachian Mountain Range in all of its glory. The town is around two hours’ drive from Charlotte, one of the state’s largest cities, and an hour's drive from Asheville, another amazing city in the mountains of western North Carolina.

The Great Outdoors

Vast expanses of nature dominate the area surrounding the town, so you'll have lots of options when you rent an RV in Newland, NC. Grandfather Mountain State Park is nearby and was once a privately-owned attraction sold to the state to be made into a park. Hiking and camping in the park are an absolute pleasure if you love panoramic views of tree-covered mountain tops and reconnecting with nature. The highest swinging bridge in the entire country can be found at the park, connecting two peaks of Grandfather Mountain, but be aware this bridge is not for the faint of heart.

Another state park worth looking into is Lake James State Park, a large recreation-based park located on the shores of Lake James itself. There are 25 miles of nature trails wrapping around the large lake, ideal for mountain biking, hiking, and more. The lake is where the most fun can be had, with lots of space to swim, canoe, kayak, and go fishing. There are three different campgrounds on the shores of the lake that you can make use of overnight when you bring your Newland RV rental for a multi-day excursion.

Farther to the south, you can travel to South Mountains State Park, full of spectacular canyons, rocky gorges carved out by the Catawba River, and angelic waterfalls trickling down massive geological features. High Shoals Falls cascades over 80 feet to a spring-fed pool below and is one of the many waterfalls to be found while trekking through the mountainous park.

If you want to get out into the wilderness, Cherokee National Forest and Pisgah National Forest both provide exactly what you are looking for and more. Pisgah National Forest borders both Lake James State Park and Grandfather Mountain State Park, taking up over a half-million acres of land. There are lots of long-distance nature trails in the park where you can hike, backpack, or mountain bike, and plenty of campgrounds for the Newland motorhome rental. On top of that, a tenth of the forest is thought to be old-growth, with ancient trees and diverse plant life intermixed.

Cherokee National Forest has 11 wilderness areas and takes up large swaths of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Appalachian Mountains, and the Smoky Mountains too. There are lots of rivers and waterways that you can canoe, kayak, or whitewater raft on in this amazing forest, which once hosted Olympic events for whitewater rafting.

RV Parks

It should be easy to find a place to stay with your Newland camper rental. There are rustic, public campgrounds in the area, and also a healthy offering of other campgrounds too. Buffalo Camp and RV Park is in the heart of national forest land, with nature trails, spacious campsites, and incredible wildlife.

Down by the River Campground is close to town, with an abundance of camping sites to choose from. There are pavilions for guests to use, dog parks, bathrooms, laundry facilities, a riverfront, and an activity center.

The Little Campground & Cabin could be an ideal place to reconnect with nature, with rental cabins and accommodating campsites. There are laundry facilities, wireless internet, cable TV, bathrooms, and stunning views at this charming park in the mountains of North Carolina.

City Sightseeing

The county seat of Avery County might be tiny, but there are some entertaining ways to pass the time when you book a travel trailer rental in Newland. Small-town stores, local wineries and vineyards, breweries, and farmers markets dot the streets of this historic town, but mouthwatering barbecue takes the proverbial cake. There are several barbecue joints in town that have perfected the South’s traditions for cooking up meats and making savory sauces.

The Avery Museum in town is the go-to resource for all those hoping to learn a thing or two about either Newland or Avery County as a whole. The museum is located inside the old county jail, a historic building with its own stories to tell. The building was erected in 1913, and built from bricks made right in the town square. You can learn about a wide range of topics in this small informative space, like the native tribes, the pioneers, the first railroads, and much more. There is even a specialized exhibit revolving around Lulu Belle and Scotty Wiseman, a soulful music duo with roots in Newland.

Along with the Avery County Jail, the Avery County Courthouse is also found on the National Register for Historic Places. The ornate courthouse was built the same year as the jailhouse, designed with humongous white pillars and an iconic dome on top. The building is one of many impressive courthouses scattered throughout the South, built in a time when towns were fiercely competitive with one another.
