Serving as the seat of Martin County, Williamston is a historic city in North Carolina’s Inner Banks region. It was founded in 1779 as an important trade center and port along the Roanoke River and named after a local military commander, William Williams. The settlement flourished with the coming of the railroad and tobacco industry in the late 19th century before establishing itself as a hub of equine activity.
