The site was established in 2000 and comprises of two buildings; the Education & Research Center and Ida Saxton McKinley’s family home. Getting Outdoors

The 3.7 miles long Sippo Lake Trail is relatively flat, making it suitable for hikers of all skill levels.

If you prefer cycling, you’ll be spoilt for choice over the number of trails in the area. The 1.25 miles long Stark Electric Railway Trail is fantastic for a ride with the family. If that seems like a walk in the park, try the 10 miles long Sippo Valley Trail.

Portage Lakes State Park in Akron is the place to be for some boating, fishing, and swimming action. Turkeyfoot Lake has a 900-foot public swimming beach for use only during the day. The beach has changing booths, latrines, and even parking to leave your campervan at.

Boating is allowed at the park, provided your motor doesn’t exceed 400 horsepower. There are a total of eight boat ramps offering access to the lakes spread across the park. Didn’t bring a boat? Don’t worry. There are a couple of private marinas in the area that rent out boats.

Camping at First Ladies National Historic Site

Exploring the Area

Canton is an amazing city with loads of attractions that are well worth visiting. Did you know that Canton is the birthplace of the National Football League? The Pro Football Hall of Fame is one of the city’s biggest attractions? Since its opening in 1920, more than 300 professional footballers have been inducted. Some of the notable athletes include Buck Buchanan, Larry Allen, and Nick Buoniconti.

For those who are a petrol head, the Canton Classic Car Museum is a must-visit. The museum, which was opened in 1978, is housed in a 1914 Ford dealership. More than 40 gorgeous vintage automobiles are on display at this gem of a museum. Some of the iconic cars in this museum include a 1911 Model T Ford, a 1970 Plymouth Super Bird, and a 1966 Ford Mustang. The star of the show is a 1901 curved-dash Oldsmobile.

If the car museum seemed fantastic, wait until you visit The MAPS Air Museum in North Canton. The museum serves as the premier center of aviation history in Northeast Ohio. The aviation museum is home to over 50 aircraft, most of which are on loan from the U.S. Air Force and Navy for restoration. Some of the highlights include an F-4 Phantom, a MiG-17, and an F-14 Tomcat.
