Malabar has four great hiking trails of various difficulty levels, not including the side trails and connectors. All of the trails let you traverse the many beautiful landscapes the park has to offer, including lowlands, old-growth forests, and rocky caves. The shortest trail is the Jungle Brook Trail, a 0.7-mile loop, while the longest is the Pleasant Valley Bridle Trail at just over five miles long.

You could spend a lifetime at Malabar Farm State Park and still not see all the amazing flora and fauna that live here. Wildlife viewing is one of the most popular activities for Malabar Farm State Park campers. Bring your camera or keep your eyes peeled for mammals like chipmunks, southern bog lemmings, deer mouse, and the little brown bat. See reptiles like the queen snake, common snapping turtle, and the eastern fox snake. Depending on the season, you can even see a bald eagle, barn swallow, or dickcissel. You’ll find fun landmarks like the Old Barn, Bromfield’s Willy’s Jeep, which has been restored for visitors, and the big dairy exhibit, which shows visitors how cows produce milk throughout their lifetimes. The park runs on geothermal energy and wind turbines. You’ll even find some beekeepers working with their hives.

Camping at Malabar Farm State Park

Malabar Farm State Park offers 15 campsites for primitive campers who like to rough it in nature. You won’t find any electrical or water hookups, and provisions are limited to pit restrooms and a dumpster.

RV camping near Malabar Farm State Park is a possibility for those traveling in a campervan rental who prefer their creature comforts. You’ll find a few campgrounds in the vicinity, one of which is River Trail Crossing Campground. This RV campground provides full hookups, hot showers, and well-kept public restrooms. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, like fishing, volleyball, hiking, and horseshoes.

You'll find more motorhome camping opportunities just around the corner at Butler / Mohican KOA. Less than 10 miles from the Malabar, this KOA site has a large selection of amenities to make your camping trip more enjoyable. Electrical hookups are available, and the campground can accommodate RVs up to 100 feet in length. The KOA also offers Wi-Fi, dump stations, a dog park, and clean restrooms and hot showers. Once you've set up camp, hit the heated pool, or venture off-site to discover the area's hiking trails.

Exploring the Area

If you're looking for something child-friendly to do on your RV camping vacation, take a short 20-minute drive north to the Little Buckeye Children's Museum. One of the fun things about Little Buckeye is that it's a play-based museum offering around 40 interactive exhibits for youngsters to discover on their own. Your kids can play doctor, roam around with dinosaurs, go “grocery shopping”, or play in the miniature tree-house themed playset. There's even a stage with a full wardrobe so your children can put on the perfect play.

Camping in an RV near Malabar Farm State Park will give you the freedom to go wherever your heart desires. Near the Little Buckeye Children’s Museum is the Mansfield Memorial Museum, which provides more family-friendly fun. Check out the Elektro exhibit, which houses the world’s first walking, talking robot. Or head over to the Breweries and Bottlers of Mansfield exhibit. Learn all about the history of one of Mansfield’s most interesting pastimes: brewing and bottling beer. You’ll also find a military exhibit with uniforms, memorabilia, and personal stories that commemorate the military in Mansfield.

Also about a 20-minute drive north of Malabar is Kingwood Center Gardens. Fun for all, this breathtaking museum is home to some very colorful gardens where you’ll find more flowers than you could imagine. There's also a garden shop, a greenhouse, and even a mansion to visit. Complete with gorgeous, paved walking trails, Kingwood Center Gardens is a must-see attraction when RV camping in the area.

When it comes to gas stations, there's a small selection of them within a 15-minute drive. In each direction, you’ll find one or two gas stations where you can top off your tank, fill up on snacks, and get ready to get back on the road. For food, you won't find a ton of options nearby, but a 15-minute drive north towards Mansfield will land you near a few. Burritos, pizzas, and old country stores are some notable choices. Highway 71 is the nearest major road and can take you north towards Akron or south towards Columbus.
