Portage is a town in Wood County, Ohio, that was established in 1836; it should not be confused with Portage County, which is much farther east and unrelated. The Portage Post Office was established in 1829, and both take their name from the nearby Portage River. The word “portage” is a Native American word meaning “to carry” (early natives and even contemporary canoe buffs “portage” their canoes between water sources that are disconnected). Wood County was created in 1820, not too long before Portage, as a result of the Lower Maumee Treaty of 1817. Portage village was incorporated in 1857.

The Great Outdoors
Oak Openings Preserve Metropark consists of wetlands and vegetated dunes that alternate throughout an oak savannah ecosystem that inhabits most of the park. There are miles upon miles of nature trails running through pine and spruce tree stands. Visitors are also allowed to go mountain bike riding on hard surface trails, while horseback riders and hikers can enjoy the soft surface trails. Camping is allowed, and visitors to the park in winter can enjoy cross-country skiing. Birdwatchers can look for indigo buntings, whippoorwills, and lark sparrows, among other species.

There is lots to do in and around Portage, starting with the museums. One of them is dedicated to antique cars and is near U.S. 6, one of the first cross-country highways in America. The museum tour begins with a recreated 1940's Texaco gas station, continues through a working garage where additional classic cars undergo restoration, and ends in a showroom filled with antiques from the 1930s through to the '60s and some antique military vehicles. An authentic and historic working farm demonstrates what life was like during the Great Depression, and a local planetarium has an outdoor deck and puts on monthly shows about different astronomy topics. The RV was exactly what made the vacation more than perfect. There is enough room for the family to gather in the open living area especially if the weather is rainy or extremely hot. The RV was fully stocked with everything needed for the week . Let's one focus on clothing and food that will be needed and that makes planning and packing easier. It turned our vacation into more like" glamping than camping". The host Allison was so easy to work with. Our needs were more than met and was easy to communicate with through the message center. The RV was perfectly set up and delivered right to our camping site which was so nice to arrive to. I cannot recommend this host enough. She checks to make sure everything is going ok and is available when it is not. We will definitely use this host again for future family vacations. Thank You so much for making this vacation special for us,.
