East Harbor State Park is a 1,831-acre park located along the shore of Lake Erie. From its beautiful beaches, sand dunes, and wetlands, the park attracts visitors from all around the country. Here, you'll find well-equipped RV camping sites, incredible scenery, and fun activities for the whole family. The park has been one of northern Ohio's most popular attractions for several years and is worth a stay.
The area that's now East Harbor State Park was once the home of Native American tribes, namely the Ottawa, until the War of 1812. Settlers who later occupied the area cultivated an abundance of grapes and peaches, thanks to the region's fertile soil and climate. The terrain is an effect of the glaciers thousands of years ago that formed Lake Erie and the surrounding marshlands left behind by the Great Black Swamp. The park's miles of wetlands are home to an extensive amount of wildlife, such as green frogs, water snakes, and migrating waterfowl. Book an RV in Ottawa County for fun vacation in the great outdoors.
Lake Erie's beautiful waters provide an excellent boating experience. The park offers dock rentals, launch ramps, and on-site service for your convenience. The lake, known as the walleye capital of the world, is a great spot for anglers as well. Other fish you might catch besides walleye include channel catfish, yellow perch, white bass, and smallmouth bass.
Hiking is a huge attraction to this scenic park. East Harbor State Park has 11 marked trails full of sights to see. The ten-mile trail network features paths up to two miles long which range in difficulty from easy to moderate. Most of the trails are multi-use and open to bikes and snowmobiles. While exploring the trails, keep your eyes open for wildlife such as muskrats, foxes, and snakes. The wetlands are also home to ducks, gulls, and other waterfowl for all the birdwatchers. RV camping is a great way to see all the wildlife the park has to offer.
Swimming is an excellent way to beat the heat after exploring the park on foot. East Harbor State Park contains a large, sandy beach located on the lake's shore that's perfect for a relaxing swim or a little sunbathing. The park doesn't permit floating devices on the lake, though, so keep this in mind.
Winter recreation opportunities attract many visitors during the snowy season. The park offers cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and ice skating. Five of the park's trails are open to snowmobiles in the winter, while all trails are open to snowshoers and skiers.
East Harbor State Park has 340 electric sites available for campers, as well as 160 non-electric sites. Over 50 sites have full hookups for RV campers, and all are equipped with level concrete pads. The areas are fairly large and located on flat ground, making it convenient for motorhome camping. Ten group campsites offer space for up to 50 people. The group sites are located on their own loop, away from the family sites.
East Harbor State Park campground offers clean showers, flush toilets, and dump stations. A boat ramp and camp store are also located near the campsites. Anglers can clean their catch of the day at the fish cleaning building near the campground. All sites come with a picnic table and fire ring, and campers may bring their pet along for the trip.
While you're camping at East Harbor State Park, head over to Marblehead Lighthouse State Park. This stunning park is located in the village of Marblehead and contains the oldest operational lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Tours of the lighthouse are available during the summer months. You'll find plenty of history to take in here, so add this stop to your itinerary when planning to camp at East Harbor State Park.
The Magee Marsh Wildlife Area is an extraordinary 2,200 acres of wetlands. The preserve offers nature study areas and fishing at Turtle Creek. Controlled public duck hunting is also a common pastime, so stop by if that interests you. Along the main road to the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area is the Sportmen's Migratory Bird Center. Here, you can see wildlife exhibits of local animals and informational displays, and learn the history of the geography of the area. It's both an exciting and educational experience, making it a perfect stop on your RV camping trip through the area. Book an RV in Lucas County, or stick with Ottawa; the marshes are part of both counties.
