Middle Bass Island is a small island in Lake Erie. It sits comfortably between Port Clinton and Put-In-Bay, not far from Pelee Island in Ontario. If you’re looking for a place to do water sports, this is the spot for you. Whether it's boating, swimming, or fishing, Middle Bass Island is never too far from the water.

Middle Bass is also known for its winery, which closed down but has since been renovated and opened for visitors to tour the premises. RV rentals aren't permitted on the island, but you can park on one of the other nearby islands that do support RV campers, then take a ferry to the park. Search for an RV near Ottawa County today and start living that island life.

Getting Outdoors

If it’s water sports you’re looking to do, you’ve picked the right place. Middle Bass Island State Park is surrounded by water and has beach access, which provides you with everything you need to play in the sun. Bring your own boat, or rent a jet ski on the island and hit the waves. You could throw on your swim gear and take a dip in the lake. Maybe you want to do some fishing? There are plenty of places to cast a line on the shore, or you can launch out on a boat. Check out the marina, where you’ll find a 190-slip dock that houses boats up to 48 feet long.

Wildlife viewing at Middle Bass Island State Park is another popular activity. The flora and fauna of the island are fascinating — you’ll definitely want to bring binoculars or a camera. You just might find a fox snake, snapping turtle, or common mudpuppy. Also, keep an eye out for the wide variety of dragonflies and butterflies. On the water or in the air, you’ll find swans, geese, hawks, and sandpipers.

Want to get a bit of exercise and also see the island? The entire island is only about three and a half miles from tip to tip. Rent a bike, bring your own, or go for a nice walk around the entire thing. Breathe in that crisp island air, let the sun soak into your skin, listen to the birds and the waves as they converse with each other. Cycling at Middle Bass Island State Park is one of the best ways to see the island.

Camping at Middle Bass Island State Park

While motorhome rentals aren’t permitted on the island, tent camping at Middle Bass Island State Park is available. It's kind of a fend-for-yourself deal, as none of the campsites have electric or water hookups. However, drinking water is available nearby, as well as public toilets. Campfires are permitted on-site, and Wi-Fi is available in the park. With its close proximity to the water, beach activities are available for all guests.

The nearest place where you can camp in an RV near Middle Bass Island State Park is East Harbor State Park. Depending on the ferry schedule, it should take about an hour and 20 minutes to get from park to park. Once you've arrived, you'll have around 570 sites to choose from. You’ll enjoy full-hookups, dockage, and Wi-Fi access. The park is also pet-friendly and has beach access as well as clean showers and toilets.

Exploring the Area

Middle Bass Island State Park is most notably known for being home to the Lonz Winery. Once a working winery, this place closed down in 2000 and has since been reopened for public tours. The brick and stone architecture is unique, almost castle-esque. Since its restoration, visitors can see the five historic cellars, the press house, and explore the rest of the grounds.

Every summer, the patio of Lonz Winery hosts the annual Middle Bass Island Music Festival. Fun for the whole family, it's a great chance to eat food, enjoy drinks, and dance to some of the best music in Ohio. If grooving in the sun is on your to-do list while RV camping at Lake Erie, check the dates for this year’s festival and book accordingly.

If the wonderful beaches on Middle Bass Island aren't enough, head on down to Put-In-Bay. Here, you'll find some lovely pebble beaches where you can rent jet skis, go swimming, and generally enjoy nature. You can try out any of the area's nice restaurants and end the night with a glass of wine overlooking the placid waters of the lake.

Being a small island, there are no gas stations nearby; however, there are a few on Put-In-Bay and a ton on the mainland. As far as food goes, you’ll find one or two spots on the island itself, but plenty more on Put-In-Bay, like pizza joints, American-style grills, and an Irish pub. On your way home, once you hit the mainland, I-90 can take you west towards Toledo or east towards Cleveland.
