South Bass Island State Park may seem minuscule to some, but this 33-acre park offers visitors some of the most magnificent views of Lake Erie. Located near Put-in-Bay, Ohio, the park sits atop glorious white cliffs and offers wooded campgrounds for visitors camping in an RV. No worries if you don't own your own motorhome, you can book an RV in Ottawa County and spend time exploring the natural beauty of Ohio.

Campers can head over to Toledo for an entertaining day of sightseeing or to find good restaurants and shopping. Toledo is less than a two-hour drive from South Bass Island State Park. Drop into Sandusky and pick up supplies for your rental motorhome before heading to the park.

Getting Outdoors

Spending time boating on Lake Erie when camping at South Bass Island State Park is the ideal vacation for many people. A boat launch ramp is located near the park's picnic area and provides direct access to Lake Erie. Oak Point State Park, also near Put-in-Bay, has several day-use docks for boaters. Visitors can rent kayaks, powerboats, and other personal watercraft near the park.

Anglers of all skill levels will jump at the chance to try their luck on Lake Erie. Those wanting to do a little fishing from the shore will find a fishing pier near the park entrance. Fishing boats are available for rent near the park. South Bass Island State Park campers can clean their catch for lunch or dinner at the on-site fish cleaning station. Before tossing your line into the water, make sure you have a valid Ohio fishing license.

South Bass Island State Park doesn't have white sandy beaches for visitors to lounge around and soak up the sun, but there's a small stone beach in the park that provides direct access to Lake Erie. Swimming is only allowed in designated, marked areas. There are no lifeguards on duty at the park, so exercise caution when swimming in Lake Erie.

Camping at South Bass Island State Park

If you're planning to camp at South Bass Island State Park in a rig that requires full hookups, you'll want to book your site in advance. Of the park's 128 sites, only ten are full-service. More than 50 sites offer electric hookups, while nine are non-electric. The remaining 58 sites are for tent campers only. Modern flush toilets and showers are within walking distance of each site. A convenient dump station is also located within the park.

Don't worry if all sites at the park are already reserved; you can check out Cedarlane RV Park in Port Clinton. This RV park is only a short drive from South Bass Island State Park and offers clean restrooms and showers. Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer are available. The park can also accommodate larger RV rentals, making it an excellent place to camp in an RV near South Bass Island State Park.

A short distance from South Bass Island State Park, Paradise Acres Campgrounds in Oak Harbor is another good alternative. Each campsite has a fire ring and a picnic table. Full-hookup sites are also available. Campers can pick up supplies, snacks, and souvenirs from the on-site camp store.

Exploring the Area

While motorhome camping in Ohio, plan to spend a day in Toledo at the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium. Toledo is just under two hours from South Bass Island State Park and has one of the biggest zoos in the country, with over 10,000 animals and over 700 species represented. Plan on spending a few hours wandering through the zoo and visiting the gift shop before heading back to the park.

Head over to Oregon in Lucas County and visit Maumee Bay State Park. This is one of the newer parks in Ohio, joining the Ohio park system in 1975. This park boasts a golf course and lodge. Visitors can enjoy learning more about the coastal region and the wet woods and marshes that make up a large portion of the 1,336-acre park. Visitors can enjoy water sports, hiking, picnicking, golf, and even birdwatching while visiting Maumee Bay State Park.

Learn more about the Great Lakes region at the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo. This museum is located on the banks of the Maumee River in the Toledo Maritime Center. The museum has memorialized the history of the Great Lakes, starting from the first settlers in the 17th century all the way to today's sailors.
