A charming little park tucked away in the Laurel Highlands, Kooser State Park is one of the hidden gems of the Pennsylvania state park system. Located roughly 15 minutes northwest of Somerset, this 250-acre park is an idyllic spot for a quiet RV camping vacation.

Surrounded by forest and bisected by a meandering trout stream, Kooser State Park helps campers escape the daily grind. Wonderful fishing, hiking, and cross-country skiing can all be enjoyed here, while there's also a 35-site campground where you can set up camp for a few nights or more in a rental RV. This is the sort of park you visit in order to relax and unwind, so anyone looking to immerse themselves in nature should feel right at home here.

If a getaway in Kooser State Park sounds like your idea of camping nirvana, here's how to plan the perfect stay.

Discover Kooser State Park

Getting Outdoors

Though it may be small in size, Kooser State Park is big on outdoor relaxation. Home to a peaceful trout stream and bordering the 50,000-plus acres of Forbes State Forest, it's a wonderful spot to just get back to nature by yourself, with family, or with friends. There are also several picnic tables dotted throughout the park, as well as the reservable Mighty Oak Picnic Pavilion, making it a lovely spot for a leisurely lunch.

For many visitors, however, the best way to spend a day in Kooser State Park is to wet a line in the water. Both Kooser Run and the four-acre expanse of Kooser Lake offer quality trout fishing, while the lake is also home to bass and bluegill. Trout fishing in Kooser Run offers the most rewarding challenge though, so make sure you bring a rod or two so you can try your luck.

Another popular pastime in this beautiful state park is hiking. There are only two trails to explore here, but they're each worth the effort of strapping on your walking shoes and working up a sweat. The one-mile Kincora Trail offers a challenging trek across rugged terrain, and is the perfect escape if you're seeking a little peace and quiet. But if you're after something a little easier and more relaxing, the half-mile Tree Army Trail, which leads you alongside Kooser Run, should put a spring in your step.

Finally, when winter arrives, cross-country skiers can also take advantage of one and a half miles of trails. Designated as easy, these trails are well worth exploring for beginners and a pleasant experience for more experienced snow sports enthusiasts.

Camping at Kooser State Park

If you'd like to camp at Kooser State Park, search for a rental RV in Somerset County and then lock down a spot in the park's pristine campground. There are 35 sites to choose from here, including:

  • 5 full-hookup sites
  • 23 electrical sites
  • 7 non-electric sites

Sites are spacious and generally well shaded, and you'll be particularly pleased if you can grab a peaceful spot near the stream. Restrooms are clean and a dump station is available. Most sites are available to reserve in advance. Other features include a small playground and coin-operated laundry facilities.

Pets are also welcome on all sites, so Kooser State Park is a great spot to visit with your dog. Just make sure you keep your pet on a leash and clean up after them whenever necessary.

The campground is open from mid-April until mid-December. Nine rustic rental cabins are available all year round if you're not camping in a motorhome.

Exploring the Area

When your Kooser State Park RV camping adventure comes to an end, you'll find plenty of other wonderful attractions worth visiting nearby.

For example, if you're keen to continue exploring the Pennsylvania state parks system, Laurel Hill State Park is just a ten-minute drive to the south. Known for its beautiful lake and mountainous surroundings, the park is well worth a visit.

If you decide to head southeast towards Somerset instead, make sure you stop off at Somerset Historical Center for a look into the life of an 18th-century farmer. Tour the homesteads and cider press and check out the artifacts in the exhibit halls.

Of course, if you'd rather head somewhere a little more populated, you can steer your rental RV northwest and be in Pittsburgh in a little over an hour. When you get there, make sure you take some time to explore the wonderful Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

There really are stacks of wonderful travel experiences on offer when you rent a camper near Kooser State Park, so stop thinking about it and start planning your next RV camping vacation today.
