The Flight 93 National Memorial is situated near Shanksville, PA, in the southwest region of the state. The park is only around 30 miles north of the border the state shares with Maryland. The nearest larger town of Somerset, PA, is located less than 20 miles to the west, while the nearest large city is Pittsburgh, PA, at around 80 miles to the northwest.

Exploring the Area

The fort dates back to the 1700's and buildings and artifacts highlight what life would have been like in the area during that time. The Quecreek Mine Rescue Site is also found near Flight 93 National Memorial. Here, nine miners were rescued from over 200 feet underground, in 2002, when a mining accident occurred. There is a museum on-site that explains the incident. There is also a self-guided tour, complete with informational placards, of the aboveground portion of the site.

There are some other historical sites found nearby, such as the Somerset Historical Center. This gives the history of the local area. On given days, demonstrations of crafts can be observed, such as tapping trees for maple syrup. Some of the candy made from the syrup is available for tasting as well. The Old Log Church is also found nearby. This house of worship dates back to the early 1800s. The nearby cemetery is the final resting place for some people who lost their lives in the Revolutionary War.
