Rocky Gap State Park, located in western Maryland, contains over 3,000 acres of land and lake for visitors to explore. From its rugged mountainous terrain to its imposing cliffs and dense forest, Rocky Gap is chock full of stunning vistas. The 243-acre Lake Habeeb brings many tourists to Rocky Gap. Created from a man-made dam off of Gap Run, this lake boasts some of the most vibrant waters in the state of Maryland.

Rocky Gap State Park first opened to the public in 1974 with the help of Mr. Edward Habeeb, who, along with other landowners in the area, donated property for the development of a park. Rocky Gap's gorgeous lake was named after Mr. Habeeb to honor his contribution. The state park campground opened in 1978, and today, it brings in many visitors from all over the country thanks to its activities, amenities, and convenience. Book an RV in Allegany County and enjoy an RV camping trip you'll cherish for years to come.

Getting Outdoors

While visiting the park, be sure to check out one of the park's many multi-use trails, which vary in length and difficulty but offer plenty of sights to see. If you're looking for something simple and short, go with the Canyon Overlook Trail, a quarter-mile loop featuring spectacular views of the park's long gorge. The Lakeside Loop Trail is ideal for those looking for a more challenging adventure. This trail is a little over five miles long and takes hikers around Lake Habeeb, over bridges, and through the woodlands. For visitors wanting something harsher, the Evitts Homesite Trail is a challenging five-mile hike past small streams and mountainous terrain. This route will take visitors up to 1,000 feet of elevation.

The park's nature center is definitely worth a stop while exploring the park or camping in your RV. The nature center hosts demonstrations and events throughout the year, so you'll find something fun to do no matter what time of year you visit. Interpretive activities include nature hikes, crafts, demonstrations, and educational programs. Activities and special events are inclusive and entertaining for all ages. One of the most exciting programs at Rocky Gap can be found at the aviary, which cares for injured birds native to Maryland. Tours of the aviary are available by appointment and are subject to staff availability.

Boating is another popular attraction here at Rocky Gap State Park. Only electric motors may explore the water, but boaters are welcome on the lake 24 hours a day, so there's nothing stopping you from having a blast on the lake. Visitors can rent boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats right at the park.

Camping at Rocky Gap State Park

Rocky Gap State Park's campground offers a total of 278 campsites for tent and RV campers. Only 30 sites offer 30-amp electric hookups. Near the campsites are bathhouses with hot showers, toilets, and a camp store. Campers can easily access the park's trailheads and nature center. A private beach near the campsites is available for campers only. Canoe rentals and more can also be found here. Pets are welcome at select sites, so if you're camping at Rocky Gap State Park with your pet, make sure to book a pet-friendly site.

The park also offers a group site that can accommodate up to 40 people. This site comes complete with a two-story mini cabin and six electric sites for motorhomes. In addition to tent and RV camping, the park features 15 mini cabins and a yurt.

Exploring the Area

While out and about in the area, consider visiting the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland. Here, you can take a ride on the train and witness the natural beauty of the area while learning about its history from actors putting on interpretations. Visitors can choose their own adventure, some of which even offer lunch and dessert. What's not to like?

The Paw Paw Tunnel is another unique attraction to check out while visiting Maryland. This is a 3,000-foot-long tunnel along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, located near Oldtown. The whole family can enjoy an exciting and scenic walk down the tunnel which was originally built in 1850, as well as take in an excellent piece of history. Stay alert for slick areas, though, and be sure to bring a flashlight. While traveling down the sides of the tunnel, keep your eyes peeled for its natural erosion and markings.

Just an hour from Rocky Gap in Hagerstown, Maryland is Discovery Station, Inc. This is a great stop for anyone interested in technology, science, or history. The kids in your camping crew will love exploring the many interactive exhibits and activities. Check out displays of the Cessna 150, a full-scale triceratops, or the 15-foot model of the Titanic.
