Although many Native American tribes who once lived and hunted in Pennsylvania are long gone, their influence lingers to this day. Shenango is an Iroquois word for “the beautiful one.” The picturesque Shenango Creek flows into Shenango River Lake (also known as Shenango River Reservoir), which was formed in 1969 with the construction of a dam. The dam was deemed necessary by the United States Army Corps of Engineer because Pittsburgh, which is downriver, was experiencing some flooding problems. In 1972, when Tropical Storm Agnes struck, it’s estimated that thanks to the dam on Shenango River, 1.8 million dollars worth of damage was prevented.

Getting Outdoors
Encompassing over 3,500 acres, Shenango River Lake is an outdoor adventurer’s dream. Tall, stately oak, maple, and chestnut trees line the shores of the lake, casting shade over coves and inlets. In the tea-stained waters, several species of fish swim, searching for nourishment. Anglers can expect to catch bass, walleye, muskellunge, and panfish. The U.S. Foundation for Boating Safety has funded several life jackets, and they may be borrowed for free from the ranger station. In addition to a handful of boat launches and ramps available to the public, the RC Marina also has small-craft boats available for rent.
Camping at Shenango River Lake
Imagine walking out your rental RV, and within seconds, you’re on your boat, casting a lure into the water. Fulfill this fantasy by RV camping at Shenango River Lake Park. The Shenango Recreation Area Campground boasts over 300 sites, many of which are located on a peninsula that extends out into the lake. Most sites have electric, and water hookups, bathrooms with showers are a short walk away. The facility is pet-friendly as well. Two potential snags to this campground are: it’s open only during the summer months, and there is a train track nearby.
Exploring the Area
Sometimes it’s necessary to take a break from the fresh air and sun and rejoin civilization for a dash of socializing. There are several golf courses around Hermitage, many of which are open to the public, hop into a rental RV, and find your favorite. Hickory VFW Public Golf Course is a par-72 course with over 6,400 yards to test your drive on. Be prepared with an arsenal of clubs, as they’ll all be needed on this varied, interesting course.

Our weekend rental of this luxury Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van was outstanding, and the experience with our host made it even better. The van itself was brand new, spotless, and truly spectacular in both comfort and style. Our host, Tyler, was incredibly gracious, responsive, and easy to communicate with throughout the entire process. Pick-up and drop-off were smooth and efficient, which made coordinating a busy weekend schedule very simple. We were running on a tight schedule and Tyler and his family were very accomidating. The ride quality was smooth and quiet, and the features and finishes gave the entire trip a true luxury experience. The captains chairs reclined and had massagers in them for a relaxing ride. I highly recommend this host and this luxury Sprinter van to anyone looking for a comfortable, stylish, and memorable group experience.
