Let's start with a few questions to narrow down your options.
In the 1820s, a wealthy Texan landowner by the name of Stephen F. Austin started an incentive program to entice more people to Texas. Called the Old Three Hundred, one of the pioneers, Alexander Calvit, was drawn to Texas by this program. He went on to create a highly successful sugar plantation, which was continued by his daughter’s husband. In 1881, Solomon J. Clute purchased the land, and a very small settlement formed. It was unofficially called Clute’s Place for many years. The town didn’t quite take off. Records show that as of 1933, Clute had only 10 residents. When Dow Chemical moved into the area in the 1950s, though, the population skyrocketed to 3,000. Only then was Clute officially founded as a town, in 1955.
