Discover Forney, TX

Texas is full of charming little towns, but none are quite so welcoming as Forney. The small community on the farthest reaches of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area is known for being the “Antiques Capital of Texas” because a man named Red Whaley moved his antique store from Dallas to Forney which spurred a domino effect; sooner or later the town was full of antique stores and people from all around the country poured into town to look for rare pieces of furniture, artwork, and many other objects. Forney was ravaged by a major tornado in 2012 but has since recovered and flourished as one of the finest destinations around Dallas.

When you book an RV in Forney, Texas, you’ll get a nice healthy dose of city life coupled with the sights and sounds of the countryside. There are many places you can take your Forney RV rental in search of natural beauty in the Lonestar State because Forney is centrally located.

Explore the Outdoors

Forney has several exemplary parks for you to enjoy when you arrive in town and rent an RV. Forney Community Park is the crown jewel of the Forney Parks Department as it contains many exciting attractions for both children and adults. The basketball courts, softball complex, athletic fields, and splash water park are just a few of the reasons to see the park, but the amphitheater is one of the largest attractions. Spellman Amphitheater hosts private events and public concerts.

Lake Ray Hubbard was once called Forney Lake and is one of the best fishing spots in the state,  with species of bass, catfish, gar, and crappie in its waters. The 22,745-acre lake is an artificial lake created by the damming of the East Fork of the Trinity River.

Lavon Lake, just north of Lake Ray Hubbard, is another fun spot to enjoy the scenery and go fishing. Bratonia and Lavonia Parks both sit on the shores of Lavon Lake and have beach front camping for your Forney camper rental, as well as a few boat ramps to launch watercraft.

Lake Tawakoni State Park and Wind Point Park, on the edges of Lake Tawakoni, are other fabulous parks that serve as an ideal spot to beat the heat and take a dip in the water. Lake Tawakoni State Park has hiking and biking trails, a small geocaching community, an amphitheater for events, RV camping, and 376 acres of oak forest ready for you to explore.

If you drive down towards Houston in your Forney motorhome rental, there are an abundance of national forests that are worth visiting. Sabine National Forest, Angelina National Forest, Davy Crockett National Forest, and Sam Houston National Forest are some of the most spectacular collections of ecosystems and stunning scenery in all of Texas and are all located within a few hundred miles of one another.

City Sightseeing

Forney was once a tiny village called Brooklyn, but was renamed after John W. Forney, a local railroad official. The remnants of this village now make up the historic downtown area with a unique vibe. Entrepreneurs from Dallas have flocked to Forney to open new businesses or second locations of thriving restaurants and retail stores.

The Spellman Museum of Forney History does its very best to preserve the history of the town, while educating those interested in history. The building is full of small artifacts and relics from the past that hold significance to not only Forney but also to all of Kaufman County.

The Gentle Zoo is perfect for families with small children. Kids can enjoy running around, playing on the playground, or petting animals in the small zoo. The park even has a rideable railroad for kids, and a large maze to navigate.

Nearby Mesquite, Texas has the Devil’s Bowl Speedway which is hailed as the Southwest’s most famous racetrack. This 10,000-seat racetrack hosts different events and races every week. When you rent an RV in Forney, all of the Dallas metro area is accessible and full of wonderful attractions and exciting things to see.

Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park

attraction Mansfield, TX
Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park offers the chance to get some exercise and learn a little something about the ecosystems in this part of Texas. The park is located at the intersection of two ecoregions: the eastern Cross Timbers and the northern Blackland Prairies. The 80 acres of the park contain several different ecosystems such forests, prairies, and riparian areas. Each section is unique in plant and animal life. For instance, you'll see squirrels playing in the trees of the forest, but they rarely explore the grassy areas of the prairie. Wildflowers shine in the brightness of the sun in the prairie, but they cannot tolerate the shade of the trees. Each animal and plant is adapted to a certain area of the park. Look for other examples of these kinds of adaptations along approximately 1 mile of trails. A visit to the Nature Park is a nice way to spend the day in Mansfield, Texas.
