The "Victorian Crossroads of Central Texas", Hubbard bills itself as a bedroom community with small-town values and a rural atmosphere. It’s a 90-minute drive from Dallas and half that driving time from Waco. Book an RV in Hubbard and you can be in Mammoth National Monument in less than an hour. But you don’t have to go far to find a place for proper stargazing. Hubbard’s night sky is exceptionally dark for unimpeded views of the stars.

Texas may conjure an image of dusty ranching towns, but Hubbard is suitably wet with its handful of lakes, which draws its own share of crowds. The city’s Victorian-era charm also goes well with its proximity to historic sites such as the Chisholm Cattle Trail and the Fort Worth Stockyards, making it a nice base location to rent an RV as it'll allow travelers to journey around the mega-region known as the Texaplex.

Discover Hubbard

A Mammoth Journey in the Heart of Texas Triangle

Stargazers don't need to leave town for a very dark night of cosmic entertainment. Just a short drive from the town center, the Hubbard City Lakes Park welcomes amateur astronomers with fantastic views of the Milky Way. Try to come earlier in the day to scope out a spot by the dock of the City Lake 3 where the night sky appears clearer. Or join a guided tour led by the Central Texas Astronomical Society that comes around every month.

Near Waco lies the first – and one of the most beautiful – of Texas' state parks: Mother Neff State Park, named after Isabella Neff who donated the original six acres. Lying along a stretch of the Leon River, the park laid the groundwork for the state to establish a park system in the 1920s. Come to the park with your Hubbard camper rental and listen to birdsong, hike the canyon trails, or explore a rock shelter once used by Native Americans.

Cast a line out for white crappie and largemouth bass at White Rock Lake in Dallas. If the fish don't bite, slip into a kayak for a contemplative glide on its glass-like waters, or rent a bike and put the pedal to the metal. And if you like urban legends, ask the staff about the "Lady of the Lake" and prepare to suspend your disbelief.

But you have to believe your eyes when you see the colossal fossils at the Mammoth National Monument in Waco. Original casts of the fossils protected by glass (items removed in the park are sent to Baylor University) were left behind on site so visitors can imagine how the nursery herd drowned when the mud riverbanks caved in. The park may be small at 108 acres, but exploring it on foot gives visitors an idea of a Texas Ice Age that was conducive to the proliferation of ancient life, Columbian mammoths included.

Where To Park Your RV

You'll find motorhome parking right in town at the Hubbard City Lakes Park. There are spaces available for the Hubbard travel trailer rental with water and electric connections and access to showers and restrooms. On-site, you can launch a boat, cast a line out from the fishing dock, or hit the recreational trails. Before leaving the city, make a gas stop at one of the few gas stations in town.

Some of the closest campgrounds out of town are in Purdon, about 15 miles away. Most sites here have water and electric hookups with some sites having sewer hookups. Restrooms and showers are available. Most motorhome sites within a 30-mile radius also offer full hookups as well as access to restrooms and showers.

In a pinch, you might find a convenient spot for your motorhome rental near Hubbard in a Walmart parking lot. Talk to the manager and see if you can park here for a night or two. One of the closest Walmart stores is in Hillsboro, about half an hour's drive away. There are several truck stops here to freshen up.

A Waco Experience from Hubbard to Hillsboro

You wouldn't need a lot of imagination to figure out how Hubbard may have looked like when prosperous times came around. Just take a stroll around town for a look at the city's Victorian and turn-of-the-century structures. Some of the most beautiful are the McDaniel Family Home, the Rigsby Home, and the Wilkes-Niece-Barnett House. Hubbard's dining options are sufficient if you're fine with American comfort food, a dash of Mexican and Italian, and quick bites. Otherwise, browse the aisle of the few grocery stores in town to whip up your own favorites.

Drive your RV rental from Hubbard to Hillsboro and enrich your understanding of the region and the state as a whole. Visit the Texas Heritage Museum here to learn how Texans lived their daily lives as the Civil War raged on. Step inside the restored MKT Depot to browse railroad artifacts and pictures. Look inside the Hill County Cell Block Museum to see vintage clothing and an actual cell block where prisoners served jail time until 1983.

Fossils of 14-ft Columbian mammoths removed from the Waco Mammoth National Monument are housed at Baylor University's Mayborn Museum Complex so check if some are on display. There are also a dozen themed discovery rooms at the museum complex, enough to satisfy your curiosity in natural history. If you want to breathe some air, roam around the 13-acre historic village.

Hill County is no Texas Hill Country, but it’s right in the heart of the Texas Triangle, a highly urbanized mega-region essential to your Lone Star experience. So search for a camper rental in Hubbard, TX, follow the interstates, and you’ll soon discover some of the state’s most important natural and historic sites alongside urban delights.
