Hubert M Moss Lake is a 380-acre reservoir northwest of Gainesville, in Cooke County, Texas that was completed in 1966. The lake is named after Hubert M Moss, who highlighted the need for secure water supply in the Gainesville area, but sadly passed away before the project was agreed and started.

Hubert M Moss Lake has been well-stocked with various species of fish, and there are two public boat ramps on the lake. Just over the state line in Oklahoma is Lake Murray State Park, a great place to explore while RV camping at Hubert M Moss Lake.

To the south of Hubert M Moss Lake are the large cities of Fort Worth and Dallas, TX, while due north is Oklahoma City, OK. When you book an RV in Cooke County, you will find plenty to explore, including lakes, forests, and some great cities.

Getting Outdoors

Fishing is a popular pastime at Hubert M Moss Lake, and the reservoir is restocked on a regular basis. Keen anglers will find plenty of species to fish, including largemouth bass, spotted bass, crappie, and catfish. With two public boat ramps, it is easy to get out onto the lake, plus there are plenty of places to fish from the shoreline.

The southern boat ramp is a single-lane ramp that can handle boats of up to 24 feet. The northern ramp is dual-lane and can also accommodate boats up to 24 feet long. Both ramps are open all year, and you will need a permit from Gainesville Police to use the ramps and Hubert M Moss Lake. Water sports are permitted on the lake, and no speed limits are currently in force. There is plenty of parking for your rental RV near the boat ramps.

There are no marked trails at Hubert M Moss Lake, but there is good access to the shoreline. Just a few miles south is the Home Grown Hero Walking Trail on the outskirts of Gainesville. This 3-mile out and back trail is an easy walk for the whole family. The trail is paved along its full length, and along the way are information boards honoring military personnel that has been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

For a more challenging and scenic trail, head a little way north to Lake Murray, where there are eight well-marked routes. Most of the walks are graded easy, so great for the whole family, but the Lake Murray Mountain Bike Trail is graded as moderate. This 3-mile loop trail offers great views of the all along its route, plus areas of shade and some interesting features, such as the wooden footbridges.

Camping at Hubert M Moss Lake

While there is no RV camping available at Hubert M Moss Lake, just a few miles north at Lake Murray State Park, there are many camping areas, from basic, no facility sites to full hookup. Rock Tower campground in the southeast corner of the lake is a beautiful area, located on the lakeside and with shady sites under the trees if you prefer. Here, you’ll find modern restrooms with hot showers, a fishing pier, boat ramp, and a playground for the kiddos.

A short drive south from Hubert M Moss Lake is the Sanger Denton North KOA Journey Campground. In keeping with the KOA tradition, this is a campground with masses of facilities that caters to the whole family. Along with full hookup sites, there are pull-thru spots that can accommodate 90-foot rigs, WiFi across the whole site, and a large swimming pool. Bring your fishing gear and use the catch & release fishing pond, which is stocked with Perch, Catfish, Bass, & Crappie. Exploring the Area

Gainesville is the nearest large town, just a few miles south of the lake. It offers all the facilities you should need, such as a gas station, shopping malls and a good selection of restaurants when you are motorhome camping near Hubert M Moss Lake. A short drive further south is the city of Denton, where you’ll find anything not available in Gainesville.

While you are in Gainesville, a visit to the Morton Museum could make an interesting detour. The museum is located in the original firehouse, built in the 1880s boom time for Gainesville. The impressive building was home to the original city hall, firehouse and jail, and the two-story brick-built structure has been lovingly restored to its former glory. Inside, you’ll find historical information on the people and places of Cooke County, giving a great insight into the life of the original inhabitants.

Gainesville also has its own zoo with a wide range of domestic and exotic animals to meet. In the animal encounters area, you can meet giraffes, flamingos, capybaras, and goat feeding. A visit to the zoo would make a great day out for the whole family.
