In 1879, a group of American settlers found some land in eastern Texas that they thought would be suitable for growing cotton, corn, potatoes, and other staple crops. One of the settlers had visited Europe in the past and decided to name this new town “Italy.” It’s not clear how it was pronounced at the time, but it is now pronounced slightly differently than the European country for which it is named.
