This residential community has been known by many names like Highlands, due to its proximity to Highland Creek, and Buttermilk Junction. Buttermilk Junction was the nickname of La Marque for many years because soldiers would frequently purchase buttermilk there on journeys between Houston and Galveston. Mahan Park and Carbide Park are two of the biggest and best parks in La Marque, where you can take a break, read a book, or go for a stroll. Carbide Park has a wide variety of athletic and recreation spaces, like its basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, and more. The playscape entertains younger children and there is even a playground for seniors. Mahan Park has its own athletic fields, softball diamonds, and a boat ramp for people to launch personal watercraft. Fishing on the river banks of Mahan Park is a fine way to unwind and enjoy sunset too.

The area surrounding La Marque is chock-full of exemplary attractions as evident by the masses of people that spend their vacations there. The outlet mall in Texas City is a well-known bargain hunter’s dream, with brand name retail items from a wealth of different companies. Texas City Museum is also in Texas City to the north, known for its collection of historical artifacts. Weaponry and military uniforms from the Civil War are on display. There is also an informative exhibit recalling the explosion of 1947 that took place in Galveston Bay, one of the deadliest non-nuclear explosions of all time.

This was our first time camping and renting an RV/Conversion Van. The process was easy and the host - Eduardo - exceptional and responsive. The van was a little small for us as my husband is 6’1 but all in all had a great time camping at Stephen F Austin State Park.

The A/C works great. Great layout, efficient. Great for two. Comfortable. Had everything we needed. Would suggest small table or TV trays if planning to eat inside.
