First settled in the 1850s, Lone Oak, Texas was named after a lonely but impressive oak tree that rose above the grass-covered prairie. By the start of the Civil War, a community had established itself and a post office was built in 1869, followed 12 years later by the tracks of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad.
