Settled in 1835 by farmer John McMinn Stambaugh, this Texas town was called McMinn Chapel for many years. In 1889, the town was officially incorporated, and the town residents opted to call it Nevada in a nod to the recently acquired Nevada Territory. A now-defunct railroad company laid down tracks passing by the town, and as a result, it experienced modest, but steady growth until one day in 1927.

On May 9, 1927, a half-mile-wide F4 tornado ripped through the town, injuring over 100 and killing two dozen people. The damages exceeded $650,000, which is a little over $9.5 million in today’s dollar. The surviving residents, disheartened by the destruction of their homes and the surrounding farmlands, opted to leave it up to Collin County to rebuild. Though the county did intend to rebuild, the Great Depression further worsened the situation. As a result of the Depression, the railroad tracks, which was the local farmers’ lifeline for selling their crops, shut down. The county’s coffer was wiped out. A majority of the residents moved away seeking jobs, and the town stagnated.

Due to the other neighboring towns’ robust growth, Nevada has benefited from their prosperity, and seen small population growth in the past few decades. Today, it’s a bustling small town with a population of around 900. The closest large town is Wylie, about 10 miles west. Nevada’s proximity to not only the city of Dallas, about 40 miles southwest but also three large lakes and several recreational parks makes it an ideal place to rent an RV in.

Discover Nevada

The Great Outdoors

Find a middle ground in between hotel rooms and leaky tents by renting a motorhome in Nevada, TX. There are endless outdoor adventures just waiting for the next outdoor enthusiast. Lavon Lake is a modest 21,400-acre lake with a bounty of water activities. Sail, paddleboat, fish, swim, and more. Sixteen beaches lining the shore are ideal for suntanning and spontaneous games of disc golf or volleyball matches. Almost two dozens marinas with boat ramps dot the perimeter, granting aquatic adventurers easy access to the lake. A handful of marinas has boats available for rent. Anglers can expect to catch black, white, striped, and yellow bass, carp, catfish, and a few other species. There are daily bag limits and size limits.

Lake Ray Hubbard, in a similar vein, offers plenty of recreational water activities. One main difference between Ray Hubbard and Lavon is Rockwall Harbor. Rockwall Harbor is a waterfront entertainment center that often hosts live music, movies, and other entertainment events right on the shore. Spectators often will park on the water and enjoy the event from the comfort of their own boat.

Bring your camper rental from Nevada, as both lakes have hundreds of public and private campgrounds on their perimeter, many of which have hookups for RV rentals.

RV Parks

When you search for an RV in Nevada, TX, be sure to figure out where you’ll park. This close to Dallas, there are prohibitions restricting overnight street parking. Fortunately, there are plenty of options nearby. Lakeland RV Ranch in Farmersville, boasts country-style RV camping, with several amenities like extra-wide RV lots, a community fire pit, and a free laundry room.

Dallas Northeast Campground in Caddo Mills is a more rustic facility, though it does include WiFi and a rec hall. Heads-up, boats are not allowed.

For a dash of luxury, Plantation Place in Sunnyvale may be a candidate. The award-winning campground features lots on a large, rolling green fields, a gated security fence, and a flexible check-in/out schedule.

Exploring the City

Though Nevada is a small town with few attractions, a Nevada RV rental makes it a snap to explore the surrounding towns or to hop into Dallas for a day of fun in the city. Dallas Karting Complex is one of the largest go-kart facilities in Texas. The speedy karts can top 60 mph, and the .8 mile course features 18 challenging turns. Dallas Karting Complex regularly hosts events, including Sodi World Series and local DKC club races (check online for the schedule).

Cotton was once one of the main crops in Texas. The American Cotton Museum explores the history of cotton farming, which is surprisingly complex, and its far-reaching role in the various wars around the world. The museum exhibits documents, photographs, tools, and other artifacts related to the cotton industry. Visitors can also stroll down a replica of the 1920s-era Greenville, TX, main street.

Texas is known in particular for its love of golf. There are several private and public golf courses dotting the landscape around Nevada. Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson was rated the No. 1 course in Texas. World-renowned golf architect Leon Howard designed both courses at Sherrill Park. Experienced players will enjoy Course 1, which features long fairways and challenging hazards. Course 2 has shorter and wider fairways, and though there are hazards to steer clear of, they are not as tricky.

Another thing Texas is known for is its fervid worship of barbeque. Locals and out of towners alike will debate over which type of BBQ is best (dry or wet rubs?) and which restaurant has the best BBQ in town. One of the older restaurants in the area, Big Daddy’s Roadhouse specializes in wood-fired pit BBQs and consistently wins awards for their secret sauce.

At the end of a long day of sightseeing and adventuring, pick up a rack of baby back ribs, kick up your heels outside a Nevada RV rental, and chow down. Enjoy the warm Texas sun, friendly locals, and wide-open blue skies.
