Getting Outdoors

RV camping at Sheldon Lake opens up a lot of recreational opportunities in the area. The lake is known for excellent fishing, and anglers throng the lake in the spring, summer, and fall. Sheldon Lake is especially good for sport fishing. If you happen to be around on a Saturday, free catch-and-release fishing is allowed on the lake, and free fishing poles are provided too. Sheldon Lake is well stocked with catfish, crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass and sunfish, and for an abundance of catfish and crappie, in particular, head to the north end of the lake.

Motorboats under ten horsepower are permitted on the lake for fishing, but only between the months of March and November. After November, boating of any kind is not permitted on the lake, to keep the wintering waterfowl safe. Feel free to enjoy bank, shore, or pier fishing during these months.

When you’re camping at Sheldon Lake, keep a lookout for a variety of birds. The lake has four distinct habitats of bottomland woods, restored coastal prairie, open water and marshes, and cypress swamps, making bird watching extremely popular here. With over 200 bird species frequenting the lake and its surrounding areas at different times in the year, Sheldon Lake is a bird watcher’s paradise. Nesting birds at Sheldon Lake include heron, egret, roseate, spoonbill, Neotropic cormorant and ibis. Winter is the best time to catch a range of bird species at the lake, with some bird watchers counting an average of 90 different bird species on a single day.
